What to expect from life in Worthington

Though it’s just around 11 miles from the high-traffic atmosphere of Columbus, Worthington is a city known for its slower pace and old-fashioned sensibilities. With access to top-rated schools and a unique assortment of homes, families in particular are drawn to this first-ring suburb. Local culture and green spaces abound, and there’s a level of walkability that locals enjoy for taking in the scenery or shopping downtown. Overall, this city of about 15,000 people has a relaxed atmosphere, just a 20-minute drive from the big city.

Architecture takes center stage with Victorian and midcentury homes

Coldwell Banker Realty agent Bryce Smith says that Worthington is known for its architecture before anything else. “They don’t have cookie-cutter homes,” he says. “It’s where you go for more historic homes.” Victorian and other turn-of-the-20th-century styles are the main attraction in Old Worthington, while more practical midcentury homes line the streets in Woodward and Oxford Court. Sidewalks frequently connect homes to the shopping and entertainment downtown, giving the city a reputation for being pedestrian-friendly. “Walkability is important to a lot of people,” says Smith. “And Worthington has that old-world vibe with mature trees and walking paths.” This lifestyle comes at a cost, though not as high as some might imagine, he says. While the city’s median price for a single-family is in the low $500,000s and higher than that of the national and county medians, it’s still lower than those found in nearby cities like Dublin and Powell.
