Locals can grab sandwiches, a pint of ice cream and a bottle of wine at Rosemont Market & Bakery or stop by Brickyard Hollow Brewing Company, a popular brewery known for its Kolsch and double IPA. The brewery has a full dining menu, with everything from craft pizzas to poutine. “I used to have an office in the old Sparhawk Mill,” Akers says. “They’ve renovated it and added a really nice restaurant named the Garrison.” For fresh seafood options, the Muddy Rudder and Royal River Grill House are two popular options. Hannaford, along U.S. Route 1, has grocery needs covered, and residents can pick up gifts at Royal River Books or Island Treasure Toys.

The Yarmouth Clam Festival draws a crowd
Every Thursday afternoon from May through October, the community convenes downtown for the Yarmouth Farmers Market. Shoppers can pick up fresh flowers, warm baked goods and, of course, produce. Over the summer, the town comes alive during the annual Yarmouth Clam Festival. The event, which always starts on the third Friday in July, has it all — a parade, a shucking contest, tons of food and craft vendors, live performances, and so much more. “It has a state-wide draw,” Akers says. “It attracts probably 100,000 people each year, and proceeds go toward programs for the community.”

Yarmouth housing includes residences that were originally built in the 1800s, many of which have been renovated inside to suit modern homeowners. Offerings range from around $600,000 to $1 million. Buyers may also find cottages and Cape Cods starting closer to $400,000, and estates along the water often top $2 million. Area students may attend Yarmouth Schools — the district ranks as the No.1 in the Portsmouth area on Niche. Some children begin their learning at Yarmouth Elementary School, which earns an A score. Frank H. Harrison Middle School also scores an A. At A-rated Yarmouth High School, students may participate in winter sports such as skiing and ice hockey. “Hockey is central to the town culture,” Akers says. “Parents are very supportive of athletics.” North Yarmouth Academy, a private day school in town, is another option for Yarmouth families. Niche gives it an A and places it as the No. 3 best private K-12 school in Maine.

Peaceful parks and access to the Casco Bay
Yarmouth offers many peaceful outdoor areas. Royal River Park, on the site of the former Forest Paper Company mill complex, has a paved path, open fields and views of three different waterfalls. At Yarmouth’s largest park, Pratt’s Brook Park, locals can stroll through open meadows with bridges that cross over the brook’s tributaries. There are plenty of bird-watching sites, including open fields with bluebird boxes, blueberry fields and a rocky waterfall, and the park also has a disc golf course. The 50-acre Riverfront Woods Preserve is home to several species, including otters and deer. Residents can take their boats to the Yarmouth Boat Landing to explore the Royal River or drive across the Casco Bay to Littlejohn Island Preserve for a hike along the loop trail.
