The Riverfront branch of the Yonkers Public Library is busy with patrons who are either meeting with the library-provided job coach over Zoom on Wednesday mornings or participating in storytimes. “We just did our Winter Wonderland,” says Erik Malave, a library trainee at the Riverfront branch of the Yonkers Public Library. “We have someone dress up as Santa and give out hot chocolate and cupcakes.” The library is especially popular after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays when it hosts the Riverfront Teen Gaming event from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
“There’s the Riverfest in the summer,” says Malave. “They close down the streets by the library, and we have all these different vendors.” This one-day festival in September celebrates the community of Yonkers with vendors, rides and live performances. Environmental factors
Bordering Ludlow is the Westchester County Wastewater Treatment Plant and the American Sugar Refining Inc. These locations give off strong odors, especially during the summer. Residents say the smell fades into the background, and the city is working to update the treatment center. While efforts have aimed to reduce the scent, Riverkeeper, a New York organization with a mission to protect the Hudson and ensure safe drinking water, continues to push for a more updated facility.
