York is one of the earliest English settlements in America
York Harbor, along coastal York, is a small town packed with lobster trawlers, yachts, local shops, and history. The Old Gaol, colonial Maine's first prison established in 1656, still exists on a hill overlooking the town's center, York Village, and is open for self-guided tours. York Harbor's population swells from mid-June to Labor Day as tourists flock to its beaches and sites that tell a story. The area tends to its memories through well-preserved historical buildings and veteran memorials.

Traditional homes with coastal charms
"What's traditional in York are the shingle-style homes, with that New England coastal look," says Cindy McKenna, Realtor and associate broker at Portside Real Estate Group. "There are a lot of farmhouse styles, newer homes, and larger Cape Cods in this area. Contemporary styles are rare." Neighbors live along verdant trees engulfed by trees, and some are steps from the water. The entry point to the area is in the high $500,000s, and many properties hover between $600,000 and $900,000. It's common for homes along the coast to enter the millions — one of the most expensive, an over 5,000 square foot Victorian with a personal doc, is valued at over $4 million. Most properties in York Harbor were built in the 80's though some trace back much farther, including a shingle farmhouse built in 1910.

Visiting the historic district
York Village is a hub of local shops and eateries while also sheltering many of York Harbors most iconic sites. Residents can still attend Sunday services at The First Parish Church, built in 1747. They also picnic on the hill at Old York Gaol and take their kids to visit the York Corner Schoolhouse, built in 1755. River Current Art Gallery, York House of Pizza, The Bagel Basket and the women's clothing store Daisy Jane's are also popular stops – all within walking distance. York Hospital, also in the village, offers comprehensive services from emergency care to physical therapy. Residents head to Hannaford, less than 2 miles from the village along York Street for groceries.

Storytelling at the old schoolhouse
Many local events happen in the village. Every winter, a local second-generation arborist decorates its barren trees with white lights. Kids, ages four to 10, visit the historic York Corner Schoolhouse every Tuesday for stories about lighthouses, lobstermen and more — this event is hosted by the Old York Historical Society. And a parade runs through the village every year on Memorial Day, where neighbors lay wreaths at all eight statues dedicated to soldiers, including the World War I Memorial beside the Old York Gaol.
Spotting starfish under Wiggly Bridge
Neighbors bring their paddle boats, kayaks and fishing rods to Sewall's Bridge at the York River, which hugs the neighborhood's south side. They also wear their sneakers and stroll along Fisherman's Walk on Clark's Lane, passing under Wiggly Bridge and spotting starfish and crabs as they go. Along the C-shaped York Harbor Beach, neighbors build sandcastles by gentle waves and walk along Clift Walk trail which passes by picturesque cottages. Future boat captains learn to sail at the Agamenticus Yacht Club on Simpson's Lane. York Harbor also provides transient mooring space for boaters — including at York Harbor Marine Service on Harris Island Road, which has a dockside bar and restaurant. There are also 65 lighthouses along Maine's coast, including Nubble Lighthouse, nearly 5 miles away via Ridge Road.

York is a very nice town. The surroundings are very high quality and I would recommend that anyone should raise their kids here. Growing up, I always felt safe and that the town of York is overall very beautiful.
