South York neighborhood considered one of the city’s most desirable
On the southern outskirts of York, Grantley spans the cusp of the city right up to the farmland beyond. The housing stock in this area varies widely, from the townhouse-lined gridded streets of the city to the luxury estates dotting the winding roads in highly regarded Wyndham Hills. With a residential feel, homeowners go for this neighborhood because of its proximity to suburban amenities so close to the city. With an exclusive country club, top-rated York Suburban Schools and major employers like WellSpan York Hospital and the York College of Pennsylvania, there’s a reason why Niche ranks Grantley as the best place to live in the York Area.
From city townhouses to suburban luxury
North of Country Club Road, row houses with bay windows peering out over the sidewalks sit wall-to-wall as far as the eye can see, selling for a median price of roughly $130,000. Heading further out of the city, Colonial-inspired houses sit on modest but neat lots, with a patch of grass in the front and enough room for a detached two-car garage behind a fenced-in backyard. These homes can sell from the low $100,000s up to the mid-$300,000s. South of Country Club Road, Grantley gives way to the sweeping estates and ornamental landscaping of Wyndham Hills. Developed gradually over the past century, the houses range in style from spacious contemporary design to brick Colonial Revivals with black shutters to sleek midcentury modern homes. No matter the house, real estate agents say that buying in Wyndham Hills is a wise investment because of the neighborhood’s location and prestige, with prices starting around $350,000 and climbing well over $1 million. “They're all custom-built houses. It's not cookie cutter,” Kathy Turkewitz, a York resident for over 20 years and Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Sales. “There are tons of wonderful mature trees. And it’s in the hills, so some houses have beautiful views.”
High-scoring York Suburban Schools
Kids in Grantley might be zoned to York City Schools or York Suburban Schools, with the latter being one of the most sought-after districts in the area. Young students start their education at Valley View Elementary through the second grade, with a 14-to-1 student-teacher ratio that earns the school a B rating from Niche. They can then round out their primary education at Indian Rock Elementary, which scores an A. York Suburban Middle receives a B-plus, and York Suburban Senior High gets top marks with an A grade. According to Niche, it is also the best public high school in the York area, offering career exploration programs with some of the area’s biggest employers.
Hilly terrain makes for scenic walks and inviting greens
Residents in search of green space will find it in spades at Reservoir Park. Owned and operated by the York Water Co., the park’s rolling hills feature gravel paths past a gazebo and distant views of downtown York. Those who prefer more competitive recreation are minutes away from playing in youth sports leagues at the Veterans Memorial Park Complex, which includes an indoor ice arena, roller skating rink and skatepark. Golf enthusiasts might inquire about a membership to the Country Club of York, nestled on the edge of the neighborhood. Its exclusive amenities and 18-hole golf course have earned this York institution national renown.
Stop and dine along South George Street
Residents can pick up groceries on the way home at the Lidl located in the neighborhood or dine out at a couple of local restaurants along South George Street. Among them is the Cove, a local haunt with a large deck for casual outdoor dining and a hazy cigar lounge where connoisseurs can typically be found sipping on whiskey and dining on steak. Further north, the Copper Crust Co. is the perfect place to start the day with a breakfast sandwich or a made-from-scratch pastry. Though it bills itself as a bakery, don’t be fooled — it serves sneakily good pizza, the secret being the aged house-made dough.
Drive downtown in 10 minutes or catch the RabbitTransit bus
Grantley is well-connected by South George Street to the east, a major road that allows residents to reach downtown York in 10 minutes. Those who’d prefer to go car-free can catch the RabbitTransit buses at stops along the thoroughfare. The neighborhood also borders WellSpan York Hospital and includes the York College of Pennsylvania, while the Harrisburg International Airport is around 45 minutes away by car.
