Scenic streets and historic homes define Springdale
Grand historic homes on spacious, landscaped lots: there’s no mistaking York ’s Springdale neighborhood. Locals are often out walking along scenic, tree-shaded streets or meeting up at the active neighborhood association’s family-friendly events. It’s a short walk, bus ride or drive to local businesses, parks, WellSpan York Hospital and other major employers in the York County seat. And with Interstate 83 nearby, you have a straightforward drive to Harrisburg, Baltimore and beyond.
Prices and types of historic, custom-built homes
“Springdale is known as the nicest neighborhood within York city limits,” says Rick Shaffer, a team leader at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Homesale Realty who’s served York and Adams counties for 40 years. “It has these older, custom-type homes with real charm and character. They’re often gigantic in size. Back in its early years, you’d think it’s probably the exclusive place for the ‘who’s whos’ to live.” While there is no shortage of stately early 20th-century Colonial Revivals and charming Tudor Revival homes, you can also find simpler construction, like ranch-style homes and Cape Cods, along Springdale’s residential blocks. Prices range from the upper $200,000s to the upper $500,000s. Many homes are on the National Register of Historic Places, but only some properties are within a preservation district with strict architectural preservation rules. You can look at the York Historical Architectural Review Board’s resources to understand whether you’ll need to adhere to certain standards for exterior home improvement projects.
Historic charm and a community-oriented, family-friendly vibe
“If you were to drive through Springdale on any given nice day, you’d see people pushing baby strollers and walking dogs,” Shaffer says. “It has its own little personality.” Beyond enjoying the scenery on your own, you can also experience Springdale’s historic charm and community-oriented personality at local events. The Springdale Neighborhood Association invites residents to mingle at yearly block parties, winter holiday festivities and National Night Out celebrations. The association also supports efforts to preserve Springdale’s historic character and encourage civic involvement.

Springdale is served by the York City School District. Jackson PreK-8 is a walkable local school, just north of the neighborhood. York Country Day School, a top-rated private option for preschool through 12th grade, is about 2 miles away.
South George Street shopping and nearby commercial amenities
A handful of businesses are just outside Springdale on South George Street, positioned between WellSpan York Hospital and York College. Close to home, you can:

Lidl is about a mile away for groceries. York’s historic downtown is also about a mile from home, a hub of walkable blocks of specialty businesses near the iconic Central Market House farmers market.
Close to York's recreation hubs
Beyond using the playground at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of York, you’ll need to leave Springdale to find recreation amenities. Some of York's most used parks are about a mile away, including the sprawling Veterans Memorial Park Complex. There, you'll find plenty of baseball diamonds, a skate park, an indoor ice rink, sports courts, a playground and more. The York County Heritage Rail Trail is a favorite spot for a stroll along Codorus Creek, and cyclists take the trail all the way from York to Maryland. Golfers might join Regents’ Glen Country Club or the Country Club of York, each within 3 miles of home.
