The Avenues
Neighborhood in York, Pennsylvania
York County 17401, 17404
Walkable blocks lined by attached and detached turn of the century homes
The most striking late 19th and early 20th century homes in The Avenues fill corner and double lots with the wrap around porches and towers of Queen Annes. Plenty of simpler styles fill the neighborhood as well, especially boxy designs like American Foursquares and bungalows. Twin homes and row homes populate many streets with attached homes in similar Victorian and bare-bones architectural styles. Simple minimal traditional homes filled in lots through the midcentury. Prices usually range from around $100,000 to $300,000, though fixer uppers can go for less. Sidewalks run throughout the neighborhood, past blocks where neighbors enjoy pocket-sized front lawns shaded by mature trees and others where rowhomes sit at the edge of the concrete. Many residents rent rather than own, both in converted multi-family dwellings and larger complexes on the outskirts of The Avenues.Nearby green spaces at northern York parks
Though The Avenues is not home to any public parks, a row of recreation hubs are a handful of blocks to its northeast. Rolling hills transition from pockets of well-kept athletic courts to tree-shaded stretches of walking paths and picnic pavilions at Farquhar Park. Nearby, locals might watch the ducks swim at Kiwanis Lake or get in the water themselves at the indoor and outdoor pools of the Graham Aquatic Center. James E. (Jim) Gross Park makes up the western end of this green strip, punctuating the row of baseball diamonds at Noonan Fields with some creekside playgrounds.Attending neighborhood schools or applying for the Edgar Fahs Smith STEAM Academy
Kids in The Avenues may attend one of a few prekindergarten through eighth grade schools that earn a C-minus from Niche. Most of the neighborhood sends to Devers School, with a smaller eastern sliver attending Ferguson School. The Edgar Fahs Smith STEAM Academy is a magnet school in The Avenues, known for its project-based STEAM learning focus. William Penn Senior High School earns a C.The York State Fair and other events at the York Expo Center
Permanent street names like Cattle Drive and Livestock Road recall the big event that takes over the York Expo Center for more than a week each summer. The York State Fair has attracted visitors to some kinds of agricultural markets and shows for longer than the United States has been a country, but plenty of modern fairgoers come for the live music, carnival rides and fried foods. “The York State Fair is the biggest thing that happens, but there’s also the June hot rod show when all the muscle cars come in and more rural activities like gun shows, knife shows and tractor expos,” Barshinger notes.Commuting around York City or on U.S. Route 30 and I-83
Commuters are close to the county seat hubs of York City, with downtown just a couple of miles away. Sidewalks make The Avenues walkable to downtown, though many make use of personal vehicles or rabbittransit buses that stop on streets framing the neighborhood to get around. U.S. Route 30 and Interstate 83 intersect a couple of miles to the northeast, leading to more distant commuter hubs like Harrisburg and Lancaster. The Avenues is within 3 miles of both UPMC Memorial Hospital and WellSpan York Hospital. Harrisburg International Airport is about 30 miles from home.Shopping and dining on Carlisle Road
A limited commercial area branches near Roosevelt Avenue, but for shopping beyond what’s available at the Family Dollar, locals are likely to head out of The Avenues to strip malls along Carlisle Road. About a mile from home, names like GIANT, T.J. Maxx and Lowe’s take up anchor footprints. Many nearby restaurants are national chains like Chili’s and Bob Evans, but others serve locally focused menus; while Marco’s Pizza & Sweet Shack is known for their Italian fare, they make it a point to serve Hershey’s brand ice cream in a show of central PA loyalty. York’s walkable small business district fills the blocks around York Central Market within 2 miles of home.Industrial noise on the outskirts of The Avenues
While The Avenues is almost strictly residential, industrial areas make up some of its borders. Those living towards the east side might hear trains passing through or see an influx of truck traffic thanks to nearby warehouses. The Roosevelt Quarry sprawls behind a cove of trees to the northwest; residents might notice a slight rumbling underfoot when stone is being blasted with explosives.
