The center of a small town west of Muncie
Six miles west of Muncie sits the suburb of Yorktown, a small-town desirable for its housing and its inclusion within the top-rated school district in Delaware County. “The schools drive people to want to live here,” says Town Manager Chase Bruton. Because of the popularity of the area's public schools, the town has also developed many family-friendly amenities like urban and riverside parks, competitive youth sports leagues and community events like outdoor concerts and farmers markets. Downtown Yorktown is the central business district within Yorktown, and as such is also home to local restaurants and shops, as well as a popular park with events. The neighborhood features historic single-family homes, perfect for those looking for less than quarter-acre lots and who want to live within walking distance of Downtown.

Downtown Yorktown has a small urban park with a splash pad called the Yorktown Civic Green. This centrally located area hosts free exercise classes for residents over 55 years of age, a free summer concert series and other community events. “We just had the police National Night Out, and kids were running around, playing on slides and hanging off the firetruck,” Bruton says. North of the neighborhood, just across Buck Creek, is Morrow’s Meadow, a scenic park between the White River and Buck Creek. A 2-mile riverside trail also outlines this densely treed park, which includes amenities like a playground, a picnic pavilion and soccer fields. During the summers, the park hosts the Yorktown Farm and Artist Market each Friday evening, which features live music and multiple rows of local vendor booths. “We have a really nice sports park,” Bruton says of the Yorktown Sports Park, where families spend Saturdays watching baseball, softball and soccer games. The park also houses the facilities for the nationally renowned Munciana volleyball team, the country’s longest continuously operated volleyball club, which touts an impressive 40 national championships. “The team manufactures high-level volleyball players. We consistently put out multiple college D1 players from our community,” Bruton says. “People drive here from Indianapolis to take their kids to volleyball practice every day. The community here takes their volleyball very seriously.” Teams range in age, from 10 to 18 years old.

One of Indiana’s only Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas
Downtown Yorktown’s local restaurants include Osborn’s Country Kitchen, a classic homestyle diner serving authentic Indiana pork tenderloin sandwiches; and El Rancho Poblano, a Mexican restaurant known for its margaritas and bottomless chips and salsa. An exciting economic development in Downtown Yorktown has been its recent approval as a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area—a rarity in Indiana—this means that patrons can order drinks to-go from restaurants and walk around downtown with them. “You can now go buy a margarita at the Mexican restaurant and walk across the street and do your shopping with your margarita in your hand,” Bruton says. Across the street from El Rancho Poblano is Mulberry Street Uniques, a local antique shop selling furniture and home décor. Another popular local business is Four Day Ray Brewing, a newer gastropub that serves pizza and limited release beers. “We have the homecoming parade coming up, and this will be the first year you can go to the brewery and then walk out and watch the parade with your beer in hand,” Bruton says. Downtown Yorktown also has a Dollar General, but the closest supermarket is the Pay Less 5 miles down Kilgore Avenue in Muncie.
