Riverside-living with historic charm along the York River
Steeped in colonial and Revolutionary-era history, Yorktown is home to one of America’s first colonial settlements and the site of America’s most significant Revolutionary victory, a battle that effectively ended the British occupation. Not surprisingly, this small town at the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay has become a popular destination for heritage tourism, one in which the tourists far outnumber the local population, particularly in the small restaurants, parks, art galleries and historical buildings along Riverwalk Landing. However, travel inland from the York River, and home buyers will find quiet suburban streets lined with traditional homes, townhouses and newly constructed custom homes on large wooded lawns. “There’s so much value for homeowners here in Yorktown,” says Mike Pattison, a Realtor and Envision VA Home team leader with eXp Realty. “Lots of the military personnel stationed nearby buy in Yorktown and stay. In fact, I’ve got former military members working on my team at Envision VA Home.”
Classic Colonials and charming ranch-style homes
The housing market in Yorktown is relatively small, rarely consisting of more than 10 active listings. The suburban neighborhood streetscapes are flat, unlined and dotted with mature trees, and the houses sit far from the streets with large, neatly manicured lawns. The local architecture blends past and present, combining classic colonials and charmingly updated ranches with new townhouse communities and custom-built housing developments. Two-bedroom townhouses start at $265,000, existing resale inventory is typically priced between $250,000 and $400,000, and custom-built riverfront homes can sell for up to $2 million

Yorktown High School received a rare A-plus rating from Niche, and with an average SAT score of 1300, Yorktown graduates regularly attend prestigious local universities like Virginia Tech and Georgetown University. “I always tell people that Yorktown has the lowest taxes and best school district in the entire region,” says Pattison.
Sunbathe on the white-sand coastline at Yorktown Beach
Yorktown is bracketed by green and blue, neatly situated between nature preserves, golf courses and cemeteries to the west and the clear blue waters of the York River and Chesapeake Bay to the east. Residents explore the miles of multi-use trails throughout Grafton Ponds Natural Area and Newport News Park or book tee times at Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run, an 18-hole public golf course on the neighborhood’s western edge. During the summer, the town gathers on the beaches, boardwalks and fishing piers of Yorktown Beach, an inviting white-sand public beach near Yorktown’s historic district. Charles Brown Park offers a community garden, playground and multiple sports facilities.

Local boutiques and eateries along Riverwalk Landing
The core of Yorktown’s shopping district is located along the Riverwalk Landing, a mile-long stretch of boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and historic sites between the Yorktown Battlefield and the American Revolution Museum. Groceries are available at Food Lion and Kroger along George Washington Memorial Highway, the area’s busiest commercial thoroughfare. For breakfast, locals stop by the counter at Mobjack Bay Coffee, a one-of-a-kind colonial-era bakery and coffee shop, and dinner is served at Yorktown Pub, a laid-back pub with fresh fish, live music and views of the Chesapeake Bay.

The weekly farmers market and annual holiday festivals
The Yorktown waterfront bustles with holiday events, festivals and a weekly farmers market, where various vendors, artists and food trucks sell seasonal produce, fresh seafood, handmade crafts and local art. Locals bring their mats to the Carriage House for Community Yoga at the Watermen’s Museum on Mondays. Each November, the Harvest Festival brings a cornucopia of food, fun and festivities, while the Christmas Tree Lighting on Water Street dates back to 1945.
