"This is an area that offers quality homes for a low price," says 20-year Realtor Debbie Mook of Klacik Real Estate, who is also a nearby resident. "Because the area is more affordable, we see a lot of first-time buyers and investors. Plus, property taxes are really low." Gridded sidewalk-lined streets where oak and maple trees adorn the yards of modest, 100-year-old homes.

Craftsman bungalows occupy most streets, notable for their broad, covered porches. Additional architectural styles include farmhouses (referred to as National Folk Houses), Colonial revivals and Cape Cods, with prices ranging from $20,000 to $107,000. Handel's Homemade Ice Cream, located just outside the boundary, has been a community staple since the 1940s, serving crowd favorites like ice cream cones, shakes and sundaes. Additionally, Southern Park Mall, a major retail destination, offers market-exclusive brands, locally owned specialty shops and a Cinemark movie theater. For a larger variety of entertainment options, Cottage Grove residents can head downtown, where they’ll find trendy bars and restaurants, and renowned museums such as The Butler Institute of American Art.

Students continue at Chaney High School, which is also rated a C-minus.
