Erie
Backyard parks and the gemstone of the city
While the neighborhood streets have sidewalks, many are overgrown and need improvements. Fortunately, Mill Creek Park is two miles west and has over 2,000 acres of land for residents to get active on. "It's the largest metropolitan park in Ohio. There are lakes and waterfalls everywhere," Cursaro says. "You can find a bit of everything there, and it's also very safe." 15 miles of walking and hiking trails surround the park's lakes, and those looking for a game of tennis, roller hockey or golf have outlets, too. Two smaller parks, Homestead Park and Donnel Pemberton Park, are closer to the neighborhood and provide baseball diamonds, soccer fields and plenty of shady green space for a picnic or a game of catch.Only occupied dwellings remain
The northwestern end of Erie has two-story worker's cottages with a-framed roofs and front porches that span the witch of the home. With a median price of $63,000, they sell for well below the price point in Greater Youngstown. Houses only go on the market occasionally, and often, homes would be abandoned rather than sold. However, "The city received a large grant that allowed them to tear down all the abandoned and dilapidated houses. As a result, there is a lot of green space and room between homes," Cursaro says. This shift has also decreased crime in the area, as there are fewer empty buildings to host it. Ranch-style homes, bungalows, and Cape Cods remain on the streets, and the prices range between $25,000 and $100,000. Very few houses in the neighborhood have driveways leading to detached garages. Still, there is plenty of space for on-street parking, and many residents use their lawns for storing their cars.Convenient restaurants and stores along Market
Market Street runs on the neighborhood's west side, and this stretch of convenience stores, supply shops and professional services provides a convenient commercial that services and employs members of Erie. Jordan's Market and Gateway Gas & Food Mart are in the area for quick grab-and-go meals. Dollar General and Family Dollar are where many residents buy groceries. Little Milly's Oven Fresh Pizza serves cheesy pies, garlic bread sticks and meatball grinders at the neighborhood's southwest corner. Those lucky enough to catch the Kenny K's food truck parked on their road can expect corndogs, hotdogs and sausages with a generous side of fries.Public and private options nearby
Williamson Elementary School is within the boundaries of Erie and is a short walk away for many young students. Rated a C-minus by Niche, the school arranges community engagement events to encourage kids to get involved beyond the classroom. After attending Williamson from kindergarten through eighth grade, learners move on to East High School, which is also rated a C-minus. A private Catholic school, Cardinal Mooney High School, sits on the southern border of Erie and has a yearly tuition of $8,500.Getting uptown and all around
One of Erie's best features is its proximity to downtown. Less than 2 miles away, the city offers festivals and fairs, shopping centers and a growing restaurant scene. Bus lines run along Market Street and South Ave, adding accessibility for those who don't have cars. Mercy Health Hospital is 3 miles north, and Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is 13 miles north.
Crime
Erie has a higher-than-average Cap Index score, with an overall 6 out of 10. Homicide and assault with a weapon receive a 9/10, and sexual assault, robbery and burglary rate above average. “The area has gone through quite a dynamic change in the past few years,” Cursaro notes. “We got rid of a lot of crime and mobsters in recent years, and the area is continuing to improve.”
