Originally a hub for Youngstown’s industrial center, Hazelton has been a much quieter neighborhood since the steel industry crash in the 1970s. The remnants of these mills follow the Mahoning River, just south of the residential streets. Today, the area is better known for its industrial history. Otherwise, the neighborhood is quiet and sparsely populated. “It’s really a mix between the old industrial zones with some residential spots mixed in,” says Chris Roman, a Realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate. “There’s not a lot going on.”
Shotgun houses in need of renovation
Shotgun houses, bungalows and traditional two-story homes follow overgrown sidewalks on small, often sloped front lawns. Many properties are around 100 years old and require extensive restoration. Red brick and asphalt streets are quiet and shaded with mature trees. Single-car driveways are typical, often extending past the houses to small garages or carports. Prices range from the low $10,000s to the mid-$80,000s, depending on condition.
Southern dining at Angelina's
Hazelton lacks retail or general shopping, so most locals visit Boardman or Warren for the Eastwood Mall or Southern Park Mall. Dollar General and Family Dollar are both in the neighboring community of East High. First opened in 2025, Angelina’s Eatery specializes in upscale southern cuisine, a laid-back selection of seafood platters, fried chicken and oxtail dinners on the weekend. Papa’s Sports Bar is a neighborhood grill with wings on the menu and football on the TV.
Elementary and middle school at MLK
Students can begin their education at Martin Luther King Elementary School, which serves prekindergarten through eighth grade. From there, they’ll attend East High School in the nearby East High neighborhood. Both schools have a C-minus from Niche.
The pavilions at Lincoln Park
Locals frequently visit Lincoln Park to play basketball, picnic at one of the pavilions or enjoy the vast expanse of fields and trees. Other nearby parks include South Side Park, Gordon Park and Homestead Park.
A mile-and-a-half from downtown Youngstown
The neighborhood is just over a mile southeast of downtown Youngstown. Western Reserve Transit Authority has a fixed bus route that travels all over the city, stopping in Hazelton along Wilson Avenue. This route and a series of sidewalks make the area pedestrian-friendly.
Crime
Hazelton's CAP Index crime score is 5 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. Some violent crimes rate as high as 9 out of 10.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
