A former Youngstown stronghold receiving new life

Idora, a neighborhood along Mill Creek in southwest Youngstown, is best known for a now-extinct part of its history. For nearly 90 years, it housed Idora Park, a small urban amusement park, before low ticket sales and a catastrophic fire forced it to close in the 1980s. The Idora Park property has remained vacant, and the community developed a reputation for disrepair and criminal activity. (CAP Index still places it at high risk of violent crime.) However, recent revitalization efforts have increased the neighborhood’s viable housing stock and encouraged new businesses to open nearby. “It’s a cool spot to live,” says Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation Executive Director Ian Beniston. His organization has renovated residential and commercial properties in the neighborhood for years. “You can walk to a growing number of places, as well as having access to what I would characterize as a world-class park.”

"A world-class park" alongside the neighborhood

That park is Mill Creek Park, a green space spanning over 2,600 acres along Mill Creek. It borders Idora to the west, surrounding a dammed-off section of the creek called Lake Cohasset. “This area around Cohasset is probably the most beautiful section of the park,” says Mill Creek MetroParks Education Manager Cynthia Fernback. The forested Cohasset Loop trail circles the lake, where hikers can glimpse various wildlife. “I’ve seen otters, beavers, kingfishers and eagles,” Fernback says. She adds that some stretches of the trail are silted, providing an easier experience for older pedestrians. “There are no tree branches. You don’t have to keep your eyes on the ground the whole time. You can be looking up and enjoying the birds, owls and animals around you.” Ford Nature Center anchors Mill Creek Park in Idora’s northern section. This recently renovated educational building features wildlife observation areas and hosts family-oriented events like nature-themed trivia. Locals can also pass the time at The Youngstown Playhouse just east of the neighborhood. For 100 years, this community theater has hosted plays, musicals and concerts featuring Youngstown performers. It also runs classes and workshops for thespians of all ages.

From dilapidated bungalows to grand, century-old estates

“There’s quite a variation in home styles in the neighborhood,” Beniston says. Early-1900s bungalows are the most common sight on Idora’s typically gridded, occasionally winding streets. Tudor-style, Colonial Revival and Cape Cod houses of various sizes appear throughout. Ranch-style houses are rare and primarily concentrated in the neighborhood’s northern tip. Meanwhile, Beniston says the neighborhood features a few “5,000-square-foot estates on a couple of acres from 100 years ago.” Despite their grandeur, these peak at around $400,000. Conversely, vacant homes needing extensive updates start at around $25,000.

New businesses flocking to the area

A few businesses have sprouted recently along Glenwood Avenue to the east, particularly in Idora’s southeast corner. Among these is Savannah Joe’s, which opened in 2023 to serve fast-casual Southern eats in a no-frills setting. Reviewers rave about its cornbread, collard greens, mac and cheese and yams. Glenwood Grounds across the street is a coffee shop owned by the Christian nonprofit Hope for Renewal. Visitors appreciate its reasonably priced beverages and pastries, which they can enjoy in a relaxed atmosphere with couches and for-sale artwork. Household items are available at the neighborhood’s Family Dollar, while Sparkle Markets operates a grocery store about 2 miles west.
