Kirkmere, a residential neighborhood in southwest Youngstown, Ohio, offers the benefits of suburban life and coveted accessibility to Mill Creek Park. Tidy lawns, tall trees and sidewalks give the verdant suburb a sense of tranquility only 5 miles from downtown Youngstown. “This area has some really nice, well-maintained neighborhoods,” says Christopher Roman, local resident and Realtor with Howard Hanna. “It was just rated one of the most economical places to retire in the United States, and it’s true, our housing is extremely affordable, and cost-of-living is very affordable compared to a lot of areas.”

Mill Creek Park spans 2,900 acres

Kirkmere borders the expansive 2,900-acre Mill Creek Park. Residents enjoy Mill Creek Park’s large picnic area, pavilions and 20 miles of hiking trails. The park also features an array of sporting facilities, such as sand volleyball courts, soccer fields and an outdoor hockey rink in the Mill Creek Wick Recreational Area. Along with playground space and a splash pad, the recreational area has a performing arts pavilion for live concerts and events. Lanterman’s Mill, positioned along the moving creek, still works today thanks to careful restorations. After visiting the old mill, locals can walk across the covered bridge, which is especially photo-worthy when framed by the red and gold leaves of fall.
