20th century Cape Cods in need of renovation
Lower Gibson’s residential zones are on its far northwestern and southeastern sides, each connected by a handful of asphalt and red brick streets that empty onto Poland Avenue. Worn sidewalks pass eclectic groups of houses from the early 20th century: Cape Cods, bungalows and traditional two-story homes. Yards are minimal and often sloped, with carports and sheds in similarly small backyards. Many houses need renovation with prices to match. Prices range from the low $20,000s to the mid-$70,000s.Make a splash at Homestead Park
Homestead Park is a Lansingville public space outfitted with a playground, basketball court and a splash pad in the summer. Just south of Homestead is Pemberton Park, where amateur athletes of all ages test their skills on the baseball, softball and soccer fields. The Mahoning Valley Railroad Heritage Association Museum is in the neighborhood's southeastern corner and has train cars and railroad equipment from different eras on display.College prep at Rayen Middle School
Students in the area can begin at Paul C. Bunn Elementary School before enrolling in Rayen Early College Middle School, both of which have a C on Niche. Graduates of RECMS can attend Youngstown Early College High School, which has an A-minus. Other students will enroll at East High School, which has a C-minus.Muslim worship at the Islamic Society of Greater Youngstown
The neighborhood is home to the Islamic Society of Greater Youngstown, the center of the city’s Muslim community for worship, activities and outreach.Surrounding Poland Avenue
The neighborhood’s main thoroughfares are Poland Avenue and Interstate 680, which follows the area’s southern border. Poland Avenue bisects Lower Gibson and has several Western Reserve Transit Authority bus stops.Shopping at Eastwood Mall
Though Lower Gibson is full of businesses, they’re almost entirely industrial and manufacturing plants. As a result, locals must go further afield for retail and other forms of shopping. Papa’s Sports Club has a laid-back atmosphere with a menu to match, including breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Save A Lot is just south in the Flint Hill area.Important to know
