Schenley is a quaint residential neighborhood in northeast Ohio, tucked into the laid-back west end of Youngstown. The community is one of the lucky few that borders Mill Creek Park, an activity-filled center for nature lovers. Its park-side homes have housed families for generations, including that of local real estate agent Sherri Bennett of Agency Real Estate. "I grew up over here on the west side, and my mom still lives there," Bennett says. Bennett has spent most of her life in Youngstown and was a teacher in the area for 16 years. "Mill Creek is quite the draw for those who live in Schenley. It connects you to the south side and is a haven of local events, like 5Ks, marathons and more."

A variety of 20th century houses scatter Schenley
Various houses fill the suburban streets of Schenley. Near the boundaries of Mill Creek Park are symmetrical colonials and Cape Cods, desirable for their park accessibility and larger lots. These houses typically cost between $100,000 and $130,000. Moving outward from the park, houses simplify in design and scoot closer together. Modest single-story ranch-style homes sit beside National-style cottages, known for their side-gabled roofs and plain exteriors. These typically cost between $80,000 and $130,000. On the westernmost streets, like South Dunlap and South Osborn Avenue, backward-stretching shotgun cottages and Craftsman-inspired homes with pillared porches mix into the streets, costing between $40,000 and $80,000. Little libraries, like mailboxes for books, perk up in front lawns, encouraging community members to share their favorite stories. And sidewalk-lined streets encourage evening strolls.

Shopping and dining along Mahoning
Most of Schenley's commercial activity is just north, scattered along Mahoning Avenue. After a day at the park, locals will likely run into one another at Dash Inn, a cherished local dive bar on Mahoning. The old-school bar aims to support local music, showcased by a small-scale upstairs music venue. Plaza Mexico Restaurant and Cantina is another local favorite for dinner. Hungry residents enjoy the restaurant's combos with Mexican favorites. Specialty plates include ranchero chicken Colorado or arroz con pollo. Visitors can follow Mahoning Avenue to CVS or Walgreens for everyday pharmaceutical needs. For groceries, shoppers head west to Marc's or Giant Eagle.

Locals often spend their time at Schenley's gem, Mill Creek Park
East Schenley borders the northern end of Mill Creek Park, the neighborhood's main outlet for all things outdoors. "It's a well-maintained and preserved park that still has all sorts of wildlife," Bennett says. "It truly is the highlight of this area." Mill Creek stretches over 2,900 acres through southwest Youngstown, and locals often hike the trails or kayak the river. Bordering only a small portion of the expansive park, Schenley settles alongside Lake Glacier, Fellows Riverside Gardens and Mill Creek Park's recreational area. Along the southern border of Schenley, Mill Creek Wick Recreational Area features several amenities, like soccer fields, tennis courts and an outdoor hockey rink. The recreational area prides itself on a prime sledding hill, which busies with students on Ohio-promised snow days. Opposingly, a splash pad fights the humid summer heat. Also, Judge Morley Performing Arts Pavilion hosts frequent concerts within the recreational area. Just north, Fellows Riverside Gardens looks forward to the seasonal blooms of Spring and Summer, promoting self-guided tours.
