Welcome to the Steelton Neighborhood.
What remains from the steel industry’s downfall
Across the Mahoning River and northwest of Youngstown is the small neighborhood of Steelton. Named after the growing steel industry, the area saw significant development in the 1920s as the city was on its way to having a thriving economy. After the mills shut down, however, Steelton and the rest of Youngstown came to a halt. Industrial buildings, manufacturers, supply stores and a garbage collection service occupy the neighborhood's eastern end. Still, the homes in the western half hold a real sense of community. "So much of the population has lived there for many generations. Children live in the homes mom and dad brought them home from the hospital to," says Cynthia Cursaro, the owner of Tri-Sun Real Estate & Property Management. Steelton's proximity to the city's amenities and a community that stays together and knows how to rebuild after its downfall contribute to its charm.
Sts Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church is located on Belle Vista Avenue in Steelton.
100 years of church involvement
Many Ukrainian immigrants came to Steelton for work when the steel companies were mass hiring. Though the manufacturers shut down shortly after, the family lines remain today. Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church is a neighborhood stronghold and feast for the eyes. "We're celebrating our 100th anniversary this September and constructed a new bell tower with a bell imported from Ukraine. People purchased bricks with inscriptions on them in memory or honor of community members," says Mary Ann Senediak, the church's secretary. It has incredible Eastern Baroque architecture and murals covering the interior walls and ceiling. The space holds bingo every Monday for anyone to attend and regularly sells their native food to the community.
A large housing boom in the 1920s
Tall trees line the backyards of ranch-style homes and bungalows from the 1920s that sit closely together on gridded streets. Some empty lots from demolished houses provide green space between the homes ranging from $25,000 to $125,000. Simple two-story homes with pitched roofs and stucco siding often have driveways alongside them, leading to detached garages and long, narrow yards. With help from local initiatives for repairing houses and leaky roofs, many residents have been improving their curb appeal. Half the residents in the neighborhood rent, but those looking to buy can expect to find some of Greater Youngstown's least expensive homes in Steelton.

Roscoe's in Steelton is a local favorite.
Neighborhood hubs for pantry staples
Roscoe's Poultry butcher shop has been serving Greater Youngstown since 1950. What started as a poultry business now serves cuts of meat, seafood and exotic meats like camel and alligator. The establishment also stocks dry goods and pantry staples for those who would prefer to avoid traveling the 5 miles to Walmart or Aldi for more extensive grocery trips. Isabella's Market is also in town and is where locals can grab a quick snack, candy or cold soda. Dreams Bar and Grill brings the community together with New Year's and Halloween events, among others, and serves a limited menu of classic American Food like hotdogs, burgers and wings.
Flower gardens and interactive education
Mill Creek Park extends over 2,000 acres throughout western Youngstown, with lakes and spillways that feed into the Mahoning River. The park's North End section is less than 2 miles from Steelton and has some of the most picturesque spots with flower gardens, scenic lookouts and wooded walking trails. In addition to pavilions and a rose garden, the park holds events and educational classes in the botanical gardens and on the green space. Closer to home, Kochis Park has a large field and swing set for getting outside. Still, Volney Rogers Field is the go-to spot for sports, with baseball diamonds, tennis courts and a basketball court.

Getting around is getting easier
Walkability is improving thanks to the city working on sidewalks and fixing potholes. "Last summer, they were putting a lot of effort into fixing up sidewalks," Cursaro says. "There was a tremendous amount of hardscape renovation." Highways encompass Steelton, adding accessibility to the downtown area and the rest of Mahoning County. Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital is three miles away, and the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is 14 miles north. A bus line runs on Salt Springs Road, but the area is otherwise car-dependent.
