A close-knit community in all aspects
Whether at the annual Halloween Parade or simply on a summer afternoon at the public pool, Youngwood’s close-knit nature permeates year round. This borough's neighborly populace helps make a small town stand tall. The price tags here make this section of Westmoreland County relatively accessible, too. “It’s a close-knit community, everyone looks out for each other,” says Local Realtor Debbie Redding of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “ I’ve lived here for 38 years and I wouldn’t move.”

A collection of homes from the 1930s-1950s
Youngwood’s straight-line residential roads are lined with a collection of homes that were mostly built in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, Redding says. The assortment here is dominated by ramblers and colonial-style options of about 1,600 square feet on average. Houses around Youngwood stand on lots that range from about 2,400 square feet to almost 15,000 square feet. Sidewalks cut in front of properties on many of the blocks, and some of these streets provide views of the region’s rolling green hills. Redding notes that Youngwood’s selection of homes can fit first-time buyers — prices here often hover in the $100,000s and $200,000s.

There are multiple close-by restaurants Youngwood residents can enjoy, most of them located along the thoroughfares of 3rd Street and 4th Street. “There is a diverse mix of restaurants in Youngwood,” Redding says. “For a little town, it does very well.” Nobile’s is a spot on South 4th Street that Redding describes as an excellent Italian restaurant, known not just for its food but also its appetizing prices. Blended and Brewed is a well-liked coffee shop and bakery just off 4th Street, whose cheesecake is popular. Marcia’s Bakery to another place for those with a sweet tooth, on 4th Street. A public pool and park
Youngwood features the only public pool in the area outside of Greensburg to the north, Redding says. The pool is part of the Youngwood Park and Pool, a more than 20-acre expanse that’s been open for more than 60 years and is also known as Joan B. Derco Memorial Park. The pool season runs from June to August, and the facility received a renovation in 2018, adding a pair of water slides. The park itself features a playground, a ballfield and a bocce court. “It’s a very popular spot,” Redding says. Youngwood is also home to the 350-site Fox Den Acres Campground, which has a swimming pool of its own.

Parades and events in Youngwood
Youngwood’s Memorial Day parade traces along Lincoln Street and features classic cars, the Hempfield Area High marching band, fire engines and more. The borough’s Halloween parade is capped by trick-or-treating, after a route that flows from Christ United Methodist Church of Youngwood on Lincoln Street to Joan B. Derco Memorial Park. Joan B. Derco Memorial Park also hosts a Santa in the Park event in late November with games, hot drinks and, of course, Santa.
