Normal Park offers a community-centric haven minutes from Eastern Michigan University
Wooded enclaves surrounded by 20th-century homes, parks and a truly tight-knit community make Normal Park a classic example of Ypsilanti culture. The area is quiet, but close enough to the amenities of downtown Ypsi and other neighborhoods like Depot Town. Normal Park was first inhabited by professors at Michigan State Normal School, which later became Eastern Michigan University. This history has kept Normal Park a go-to for EMU staff, faculty and students. “We have a lot of professors here, but there’s also people from every walk of life you can imagine,” says Realtor and former resident Richard Mattie with Reinhart Realtors. Mattie notes that the diversity lends itself to a huge sense of community in Normal Park. “We have the neighborhood association that’s very active, and a Facebook page where if anyone needs anything, there are at least 10 people ready to help,” Mattie says. This community feel extends to the entire city of Ypsilanti, according to Mattie. “There used to be an assumption that we had a ‘wrong side of the tracks’ persona, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. I’ve found it’s the best-kept secret in Michigan,” Mattie says.

20th century homes with an active neighborhood association
Normal Park's streets ooze 20th-century appeal, lined with tidy lawns, flowering gardens and mature trees that become a riot of color in Autumn. “It’s not a cookie-cutter suburb—every home has character here,” Mattie says. There are well-maintained sidewalks throughout the community, so residents might see their neighbors out and about. “When you walk down the street, every person walking or sitting on their porch says hi,” Mattie says. Most homes are Craftsman-style, cottages or ranch-style, with listing prices between $250,000 and $400,000. There are also larger Colonial Revival and Victorian-style homes, typically listed between $425,000 and $600,000. Normal Park also has an active neighborhood association, regularly hosting events like festivals, block parties and an annual spring yard sale. “There are about 300 homes that participate in the sale,” Mattie says. “It’s so popular you can barely squeeze through the neighborhood with all the people that show up.”
