Rancho Serreno
Neighborhood in Yuma, Arizona
Yuma County
Late 20th-century homes with palm trees and large lots
Rancho Serreno residential streets are sidewalk-lined and laid out on a grid, dotted with succulents and the occasional palm tree. Arvizu says the late 20th-century homes here — either ranch- or Spanish Revival-style — are typically older than those in neighboring communities, like Picacho Village. “Their age brings prices here a tad bit lower," Arvizu says. "Some homes are remodeled, some are not." All have three or four bedrooms, and concrete driveways that lead to attached multi-car garages. Lots range from 8,000 to 10,000 square feet, landscaped with either a grassy lawn or low-water plantings; some yards feature private pools or covered patios. Prices range from $250,000 to $550,000, depending on a home’s size and features.Spending a day at West Wetlands Park
There are no parks in Rancho Serreno, but a mile northeast, Valley Aquatic Center is the neighborhood go-to for a swim in the public pool and fun on the water slide. Yuma’s largest park, the 110-acre West Wetlands Park, is about 4 miles northeast of the neighborhood, alongside the Colorado River. Arvizu says it’s common to see folks at the park swimming, walking trails and taking their kids to the playground or for a birthday cookout. The castle-themed Stewart Vincent Wolfe Creative Playground here was built about 10 years ago with the help of community volunteers and includes an accessible zipline, climbing structure and comfort swing. There’s also a fishing pond where locals cast their lines for catfish, trout and sunfish. Cycling’s popular here as well, and there’s 2-mile paved path cyclists can follow from West Wetlands Park to Gateway Park in downtown Yuma.Extracurricular opportunities at Yuma County schools
Local kids may start at Ronald Reagan Elementary, rated C by Niche, before moving on to Centennial Middle, rated C-plus. At the latter, students explore their interests in extracurriculars like physics and chess clubs; in 2024, the school's Math Counts team placed third at the Yuma County Math Counts Competition. At the B-minus-rated Cibola High, teens can join extracurriculars like academic decathlon and take dual-enrollment courses for college credit at Arizona Western College.Yuma's most popular events
Local events are held throughout the year in Yuma; two of the biggest are the Yuma County Fair and MCAS Yuma Air Show. The latter is held in March at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, about 8 miles southeast. At the show, locals come out to support the military community and get up close with modern and vintage aircraft, like helicopters and fighter jets, while experienced pilots take to the skies to perform gravity-defying tricks and aerobatics. The Yuma County Fair is held each April at the Yuma County Fairgrounds, about 6 miles southeast. During this six-day celebration, area vendors sell homemade crafts and treats, like Old West’s freshly baked cinnamon rolls. Festivities also include carnival games, live music and the annual demolition derby, where drivers compete for a cash prize in their souped-up, colorful cars.Getting around Yuma
Route 95 is about a mile east and leads 22 miles southwest to the U.S./Mexico border in San Luis. Interstate 8 is about 4 miles northeast in downtown Yuma. Rancho Serreno residents typically drive to get around, but the sidewalk-lined streets are pedestrian friendly, and Yuma County Area Transit buses stop along West 16th Street. Yuma Regional Medical Center is 3 miles southeast, and Yuma International Airport is 6 miles southeast.Shopping and dining along West 16th Street
Shopping and dining are found about a mile east, along West 16th Street. There's a Food City for groceries, and fast-food chains here include Subway and Jack in the Box. Local eateries include Arizona Donuts and Mostly Muffins, both of which are popular for their freshly baked pastries, coffee drinks and brunch fare; Mostly Muffins’ offers acai bowls, and Arizona Donuts makes breakfast burritos. For a night out, The Western Club is a casual, no-frills bar where locals dance and enjoy live music from local bands and DJs.
