In 1903, the Louisiana community of Zachary was almost destroyed by a blaze allegedly started by a greengrocer trying to flame-ripen bananas. The resilient settlement was rebuilt, and today, the buildings that survived the fire, including the 1898 Allison House, are part of the two-block downtown historic district. The city's tenacity is still evident through a devotion to its heritage and its commitment to the future. "Zachary is a small, close-knit community that is still growing," says Heath Monte with Monte Real Estate.

Chain supermarkets and local establishments
Locals restock kitchen supplies at Winn-Dixie or Walmart. Tucker's Seafood Market & Deli offers fresh crawfish, oysters and cooked items like fried catfish. Zachary has plenty of dining options to choose from; The South Plains Food Company stands out by providing its customers with a five-star experience. The indoor seating space features unique artisan tables, while outdoor seating occupies a large deck. The restaurant serves local favorites and has an entire room for on-tap beers. The local snack bar, Virginia St. Snowballs, has comforting favorites like hotdogs, nachos and flavored ice.
Homes from the last 100 years
Homes here range from traditional to contemporary, although most of the latter are new constructions. The city has cottages, bungalows, ranch-style homes, and Acadian houses. There are also French Provincial homes and custom-built residences like log cabins. There are a handful of New Orleans-style cottages peeking out of the trees. Lawns are well-kept, and some make use of natural landscaping. Prices run from $100,000 for an investment property to well over $1 million for a six-bedroom, seven-bath new construction home. "The city is not as small as it used to be. It's rapidly growing and new construction is going up," Monte says.
