University Park Estates is a residential neighborhood in east Long Beach, just north of Marina Pacifica and Belmont Beach. Named for its proximity to California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), the neighborhood is known locally as “The Hole” due to the steep drop at the Margo Avenue entrance to the neighborhood. Despite the name, University Park Estates is one of the more sought-after neighborhoods in Long Beach, offering easy access to multiple freeways and sprawling Marina Pacifica shopping centers. “The neighborhood itself is pretty quiet, but it’s close to everything,” says Realtor Scott Underwood of Meadowbrook Realty, who has worked in the area for over 20 years. “Shopping, dining, parks, the beach — it’s all a mile away at most.” The area was first developed in the early 1960s by S & S Construction, and midcentury ranch-style homes still make up most of the neighborhood’s housing stock.
