Growing Atlanta city suburb in Clayton County
Located less than 25 miles from downtown Atlanta, Lovejoy is a growing city suburb in the southern portion of Clayton County. In the last 20 years, the city’s population has grown from 2,495 people in 2000 to more than 10,000 in the 2020 Census. Like most Georgia cities, Lovejoy’s beginnings are centered around railroad development. The town became a stop on a new railway line from Macon to Atlanta and was named after a local planter, James Lankford Lovejoy, in the 1850s before being incorporated in 1861. Today, it offers homebuyers new townhouse developments, multiple parks and proximity to Atlanta and the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. “The area is growing,” says Stephanie Williams, a Realtor with Southside Realtors. “There is not as much traffic as you would find in Atlanta. It’s close to the city, and the airport is within a 30-minute drive.”

Midcentury architecture and new townhouse developments
The city’s original inventory is spread out in multiple subdivisions. It features Colonial Revivals with built-in garages and split-level properties perched on compact lots with scattered trees providing a canopy over the properties. The newer developments are in the southern end of Lovejoy, and most are new construction Craftsman-inspired townhouses, some of which are in gated communities. Prices range from $202,000 to $379,000 based on the size and condition of the properties, with the newer townhouses selling for around $340,000. “I would say that the market in Lovejoy is average right now, not too fast or slow,” Willams says.

Path through Clayton County Schools
Lovejoy is part of Clayton County Schools, which scores a C on Niche and serves more than 50,000 students. While there are multiple school paths, one option is River’s Edge Elementary, which rates as a B-minus, Eddie White Academy, which earns a C-minus, and Lovejoy High School. Lovejoy ranks as a C-minus, offers AP courses and has the Twelve Oak Stadium, the home of the Wildcats’ football, soccer and track and field teams.

Recreation leagues for all ages
Lovejoy Regional Park is one of the more spacious parks in the city and is visited for its nearly 2-mile walking trail around the park’s pond, which is also frequented by anglers. The park has a popular dog park, and is home to the South Clayton Rec Center. The center offers adult softball and flag football leagues in the fall and youth softball in the spring. On a bit smaller scale, Panhandle Park has more rec leagues, including football and cheerleading each fall and t-ball and baseball leagues in the spring. About 5 miles away, J.W. Smith Reservoir is a hotspot in the summer as people around the Atlanta Metro head to boat, canoe and fish for bass, beam, crappie and catfish.

Shopping centers along U.S. Highway 41
U.S. Highway 41 dissects Lovejoy, and the roadway forms a makeshift retail corridor. Locals can shop for essentials at an array of chain grocers, Aldi and Food Depot. The corridor has several big box stores like Home Depot and a Walmart Supercenter. Most dining options in Lovejoy are traditional chain restaurants, such as fast food options like Chick-fil-A. For a night out, residents can try Bay Breeze Seafood or Mommadede’s, which offers soul food. “Unfortunately, we don’t have a ton of mom-and-pop restaurants. Most of the food spots are going to be your typical chain restaurants,” Willams says.

NASCAR and the State Fair of Georgia
The city sits 5 miles north of the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Georgia. The race track hosts a NASCAR race each July, but the facility is visited throughout the year. Other events include boat shows, a 5K race, and the Georgia State Fair, which are held each spring at the end of April and the beginning of May. Closer to home, the city sponsors events throughout the year, including monthly senior breakfasts, a Fall Fest and Christmas in Lovejoy.

Proximity to one of the busiest airports in the country
The main thoroughfare in Lovejoy is U.S. Route 41, which runs from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Miami, Florida. In Florida and Georgia, the roadway is parallel to Interstate 75, one of Atlanta's three major cross-country interstates. MARTA offers one route, Route 800, in Lovejoy, which runs a clockwise loop with stops in the community. Another huge draw to the area is its proximity to the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. “Most of my clients are relocating here, and the proximity to the airport is important. They want to be close to the airport but not right on top of it,” Williams says. The airport is slightly more than 20 miles away, depending on location.
