Walkable downtown full of shopping and dining

During its long history, Lynbrook has gone through names like fashionable coats. It settled into its final name in 1894, when the townspeople paid homage to Brooklyn, where many of them were originally from thanks to the railroad linking the two areas, by flipping the syllables in the borough’s name. Today, the Long Island Rail Road still connects Lynbrook to Brooklyn and Manhattan, but the tight-knit suburban village has a lot to offer its residents beyond location. “It has a walkable downtown with little shops and stores and restaurants, that’s very attractive,” says Eileen O’Hara, an associate real estate broker at Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty with over 16 years of experience. “It also has some parks, a pool and just a lot of amenities.” The incorporated village is the kind of place that draws people in. “I bought there in 1991, and we were planning on leaving, but we didn’t,” says Lil Burke, a resident and licensed real estate salesperson at Douglas Elliman. “We stayed there; we built another house there. It’s a great town.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 33.2% of residents work in education, health care and social assistance. Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital is just over 2 miles away. The village’s bustling downtown is also full of locally owned businesses and restaurants that provide plenty of retail and food service jobs.

Short commute to New York City on the LIRR

One of the biggest draws to Lynbrook, Burke says, is its “brilliant commute.” Frequent express trains on the LIRR bring commuters to the city from Lynbrook Station in about 35 minutes. “We’ve got the Babylon line going to the city, we’ve got the Long Beach line going to the city, and we’ve got the West Hempstead line, so we actually have a lot of transportation from there that other towns don’t have,” Burke says. Sunrise Highway also runs through Lynbrook, and according to O’Hara, its location just 4 miles from the border of Queens is a plus for people who work or have family in the borough.

Dining and local shops in Lynbrook’s downtown

“We’ve got a great downtown with shopping, we’ve got restaurants,” Burke says. “You’ve got everything you need here.” Italian and American cuisines are particularly common in the little downtown, but there are plenty of other options, from Peruvian to halal food and bakeries or ice cream shops for dessert. There are also local businesses like clothing boutiques, beauty salons and spas for a fun day out, and residents often catch the latest movie at Regal Lynbrook. A couple of major grocery stores in the village also make essentials easy to come by.

Celebrating Oktoberfest in Greis Park

Every October, Greis Park fills with people for Oktoberfest, which features live music performances, rides, activities for kids, plenty of food and — of course — beer. According to Maryanne Hargadon, a licensed real estate salesperson with Douglas Elliman who works with Burke and has lived in Lynbrook for 28 years, events for veterans are also common.

Cost-friendly homes on walkable streets

Lynbrook’s residential streets are lined with sidewalks and dotted with trees. The median price of homes here, which are often colonials, Tudors and Cape Cods, is $735,000. This is higher than the National Association of Realtor’s reported median of $406,100, but O’Hara, Burke and Hargadon say Lynbrook’s homes typically cost less than the rest of Nassau County. “We’re not in $1 million-plus homes, we’re in an affordable price range,” Burke says. “We’re a first-time homebuyer haven, really. Most first-time homebuyers can afford to buy here, and that’s really what’s great about it.”

Swimming and local sports at Greis Park

Greis Park is Lynbrook’s only true park, but it pulls its weight. It has a roller hockey rink and large athletic fields for football, soccer, lacrosse and baseball. It’s also home to the Lynbrook Village Pool, complete with a kiddie pool area and water slides, and a recreation center that hosts activities like Zumba and painting classes for locals of all ages. Just outside Lynbrook, the Tanglewood Preserve offers a fishing pond, walking paths and the Center for Science Teaching and Learning. The center’s dinosaur museum features animatronic dinosaurs and skeletons alongside living birds, snakes and turtles. On the Atlantic Ocean, Long Beach is only about 6 miles away.

Hurricane season in Lynbrook, crime rates lower than national average

Hurricane season impacts all of Long Island, but being even a few miles inland reduces Lynbrook’s risk of flooding. The area has a minor risk of flooding and a major risk of high winds.

“They have their own fire department, police department and sanitation,” O’Hara says. Between 2022 and 2023, violent offenses in the village rose about 9% and property crimes rose about 3%, but crime rates here are generally much lower than national averages.
