Fourteen miles west of Atlanta in Cobb County, the suburban city of Mableton became Georgia’s newest when it earned cityhood in 2022. “I would describe Mableton as a fantastic community and a brand-new city full of opportunity and growth,” says Mayor Michael Owens, Mableton's first mayor. “It’s an incredible place for all types of people.” The Chattahoochee River cradles Mableton’s western side, where the city’s more established neighborhoods sit; Interstate 285 runs along Mableton’s eastern edge, which has become a hub of new residential and mixed-use development. Mableton is also Cobb County’s largest city, with a population of over 77,000. Many residents commute the 14 miles into Atlanta for work.
The Silver Comet Trail's paved paths makes it suitable for walking, biking, and rollerblading.

Cobb County's stable, affordable housing market
Mableton hasn’t experienced the same rise in housing prices that other Cobb County cities like Smyrna have in recent years, making it one of the county’s more affordable areas. Mableton’s median housing price is around $390,000, compared to the national median of about $420,000. Contemporary properties and townhouses are more common in Mableton’s east and north sides and they sell slightly higher than the city median. On the west side, midcentury ranch styles and bungalows tend to be less expensive.

Nearby attractions and the future downtown Mableton
Along Veterans Memorial Highway in the city’s center, strip malls like the Walk at Mableton are home to big-box stores, chain restaurants and grocery stores. About 7 miles north is Historic Downtown Smyrna and the Battery District, where locals can grab drinks at the many bars, catch a concert at the Coca-Cola Roxy or watch the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park. The city of Mableton plans to create a downtown area of its own for local business and culture. “The great thing about Mableton being the newest city is that we get to choose where the city center is,” Owens says. Eyes are set on Mableton’s central historic district, where the original downtown area once stood during Mableton’s brief cityhood between 1912 and 1916.

Parks and trails along the Chattahoochee River
The city experiences hot summers and very mild winters. And according to Owens, Mableton is flush with outdoor recreation: parks, trails and future recreational developments. “Our western border is the Chattahoochee River. We have Discovery Park there, which has a great walking path and an interesting history connected to the Civil War." The 62-mile Silver Comet Trail, popular for jogging and biking, runs through Mableton and will eventually connect to the Atlanta Beltline. In the central district is the Mable House Complex — the site of the city’s largest food event, Taste of Mableton — and the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre. “The Mable House Amphitheatre is a major draw," Owens says. "There are shows throughout the year that draw people from all over the metro area."

The Chattahoochee River and pollution
Though locals often fish or go rowing on the Chattahoochee River, the waterway has long suffered from pollution. Until the 1990s, the city's untreated sewage was diverted into the river. After a lawsuit, Atlanta poured $2 billion into sewage infrastructure. The river still occasionally experiences issues with sewage, but the nonprofit Chattahoochee Riverkeeper continues to regularly test and report on the safety of the river’s water.

Interstate access and CobbLinc buses
Mableton’s commuters can take Interstates 20 or 285 to reach downtown Atlanta; however, both routes can become congested throughout the day as Atlanta has several of the country’s worst traffic bottlenecks. Residents can also ride CobbLinc buses from the centrally located Mableton Park and Ride to connect with Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Blue Line trains in Atlanta. The flight hub of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is 18 miles away.
