Maplewood’s Historic Downtown is a walker’s paradise centered around the retail corridor of Manchester Road. Locals gather at craft breweries such as Schlafly Bottleworks, Side Project Brewing and Tapped Social House, or cozy cafés like Maplewood Deli and Coffeehouse. The city is also home to the nation’s first Green Dining District, which includes farm-to-table restaurants such as The Blue Duck and The Crow’s Nest, both serving comfort foods made from scratch. Festivities showcasing Maplewood’s small businesses
The city hosts several events highlighting the area’s local businesses, including the annual Sweet Tooth Tour and Coffee Crawl. Residents can also get a taste of local flavors at the SOL Food Farmers Market, which is held May through October, and the annual Taste of Maplewood Street Festival, which features food vendors, live music and more.
Diversity of Homes in Maplewood
As one of the first cities formed outside of St Louis’ city limits, Maplewood has a rich history that is reflected in its diversity of homes. “The city was founded in the early 1900s, so there are a lot of old and beautiful homes,” Withycombe says. Traditional homes include wood clapboard Victorians, and homebuyers can find four-bedroom Victorian-style homes with quarter-acre lots, covered porches and original fireplaces starting at about $535,000. Three-bedroom brick bungalows are also common and feature columned front porches, modest lots and detached garages, with prices ranging from around $200,000 to $315,000. Further from Maplewood’s Historic Downtown, homebuyers can find new construction and three-bedroom modern bungalows starting at around $490,000.

Children in the area attend the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District, which earned an A from Niche and has an average student-teacher ratio of 11 to 1. Younger kids in grades K-5 attend the nearby Maplewood Richmond Heights Elementary School, which earned an A-minus from Niche, before moving on to Maplewood Richmond Heights Middle School, which earned a grade of B-plus. Local parks and long-standing bowling alley
The community gathers at green spaces such as Deer Creek Park, which has a lighted ballfield, soccer field and a rocket-themed playground for kids to explore. Residents also frequent the Kellogg-Maplewood Dog Park, which includes a playground for kids and a fenced-in area with exercise equipment and obstacles for pooches to play off-leash. The dog park is available by membership-only and residents must pay a small annual fee to access the facility. Over on Sutton Boulevard, Saratoga Lanes is the oldest bowling alley in Mississippi and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The alley offers old-school bowling and competitive leagues in bowling or pool.

Maplewood is less than 10 miles from the lively Downtown St. Louis and is centrally located between I-64 and I-44. There are also several St. Louis Metro bus stops along Manchester Road. The community is about 12 miles south of the St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
Flooding along the Deer Creek Watershed
The southwestern portion of Maplewood borders the Deer Creek Watershed and FEMA has declared these areas an AE Flood Zone, meaning that homeowners in this area face a 1% annual chance of flooding and a 26% chance over the life of a 30-year mortgage.
