Interstate 271 goes through a portion of Mayfield Heights, the Cleveland suburb about 20 minutes from downtown, and provides convenient highway access, especially to other eastern and southern suburbs. “Mayfield Heights is great for first-time homebuyers, offering smaller homes at an affordable price. It’s a decent place to hang your hat, rather than going into an apartment and paying rent,” says Angie Molitoris, a Realtor with RE/MAX Crossroads with over 15 years of experience in the real estate business. Another aspect is the quality of education in the area, “You can’t go wrong with either private or public schools in Mayfield Heights,” Molitoris says.
A-rated school district
The public schools in Mayfield Heights are part of the Mayfield City School District, rated an A overall on Niche, with an overall 18-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Lander Elementary School has an A overall grade and about 550 kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Mayfield Middle School has an A-minus overall Niche grade. Mayfield High School has 30 clubs and organizations where students could participate, including Yoga and Environmental Clubs and a Creative Writer’s Society. The school gets an A grade overall and has a 20-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Some private schools in the area include Corpus Christi Academy, a Catholic private elementary school.
At Mayfield High School, students are prepared for success in both academics and life.
Mayfield Middle School serves both the Mayfield and Mayfield Heights communities.

The prices that attract the first-time homebuyers
While some condos are below $100,000 in the area and new construction homes are above the average price range, a house that doesn’t need remodeling will be primarily between $180,000 and $200,000. “In that price range, you’ll see bungalows, Cape Cods and ranch-style with about 1,300 square feet and no basement,” Molitoris says. Some new construction houses cost around $500,000, and some were built on land where an older house used to be, so the newer house is still in the area with older homes. Homes around 2,000 square feet with at least a partial basement approach $300,000.

Large community center
In late July 2023, the new large Mayfield Heights Aquatic Center opened with water slides and diving boards, lap swimming opportunities and a toddler swimming area. There’s also plenty of area for drying off and relaxing in the sun, with a large cabana area that can be reserved, a place to relax in the shade and a concession stand. Near the pool is the playground designed to accommodate children of all abilities. The ADA playground features surfacing ramps and surfacing that make it easy to get around in a wheelchair. It was in September of 2023 that the adjacent Mayfield Heights Community Center opened with an event center, a multi-purpose meeting room, a gymnasium that can be used for basketball, volleyball or pickleball, and a 55+ fitness center. Oakville Park totals about 4-and-a-half acres and has a playground, baseball and softball fields and a sheltered picnic area.

Cleveland Clinic hospital in the community
Another benefit to living in Mayfield Heights is access to Cleveland Clinic’s Hillcrest Hospital on Mayfield Road. With close to 500 beds, the hospital is home to expanded adult and pediatric emergency departments and a 10,000-square-foot addition to the cancer pavilion facility. The facility serves as a level II trauma center for eastern Cuyahoga County. The hospital has been in the area since 1968.

Shopping opportunities
There are major shopping in the city, including the corridor of Mayfield and SOM Center Roads, which is close to Hillcrest Hospital, where various shopping and dining options include Target, Costco and Winking Lizard Tavern, a local favorite with wings, pizza and house-smoked ribs. On the western side of I-271 are Marshalls Department Store, Fresh Thyme Market and Giant Eagle for grocery options. Further west on Mayfield Road is Arrabiata’s Italian Restaurant, which serves pasta, seafood and veal. Dine inside or, if the weather allows, outside on the patio.

Nearby Mayfield Village is the home of Progressive Insurance, employing thousands. “There are several people who work at Progressive and live in Mayfield Heights,” Molitoris says. “Ever since COVID, employees have been exclusively working from home.” Bus stops are available on Mayfield Road, serviced by the Cleveland Regional Transit Authority. The RTA Light Rail lines don’t reach as far east as Mayfield Heights.
