“Magical Maynard” is more than a commuter town
Though a small community of just under 11,000 people, Maynard has a unique culture compared to other Boston suburbs. “It possesses a micro-urban atmosphere, a genuine ‘village’ town center, a lively arts scene and a wealth of conservation and national wildlife land for hiking, walking and biking,” says Realtor Lauren Tetreault with Coldwell Banker. With 30-mile proximity to Boston, Maynard residents often commute into the city for work. However, Maynard’s wealth of events and amenities make the town more than just a bedroom community. “When I first moved here, I had a two-year plan,” Tetreault says. “After the first year, I knew I wouldn’t want to leave.”

Exploring the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge
Apart from a few community parks and gardens throughout Maynard, most outdoor recreation takes place at the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge. The over-2,000-acre area has 15 miles of multiuse paths, including the Assabet River Rail Trail. Walkways also run along Taylor Brook and Puffer Pond, both popular for fishing. On the north end of town, the public nine-hole Maynard Golf Course has been around since the 1920s. Pet owners can take their pups to the volunteer-run Maynard Dog Park.

Annual events and a movie night at the Maynard Fine Arts Theatre
There’s always something happening in town, and as Tetreault concludes, “Maynard loves a party!” Maynard Fest, held in October, is the premier event, with live bands, food and activities for kids. Many annual events center around music, including the Maynard Porch Fest and a summer concert series at Veteran’s Memorial Park. During the Christmas season, Santa flies into town on a helicopter for the Maynard Holiday Parade.
Other activities revolve around the active arts community. The Maynard Fine Arts Theatre is one of the town’s most prominent cultural hubs and presents mainstream and arthouse films, live performances and private parties. Creatives can explore the local and regional art exhibits at the 6 Bridges Gallery or paint their own pot at the Art Signals Studio.

Meeting for a coffee at the Boston Bean House
Boutiques, cafes and small businesses line the main roads of downtown Maynard, and some restaurants have sidewalk seating that juts into the street. Foodies can explore a wealth of dishes, from Mexican entradas to Ramen noodles, right in town. “We have some tremendous independent ethnic restaurants,” Tetreault says. “I also love the local coffee shop, The Boston Bean House, which tends to be a significant meeting place, and for a great tavern-like setting for food and drink, The Pleasant Café.” Shopping centers off Parker Street and a couple miles away in Acton have big-box grocers and department stores.
