With its charming suburban feel, Maywood is a popular destination for those who have to commute – something that’s become truer in the last few years. “Housing here is in high demand, and has been increasing every year for a decade,” says Simone Healey, broker associate at Vikki Healey Properties and a lifelong resident of Maywood. “We used to like calling it a hidden gem – but it’s becoming less hidden with each day.” Homes tend to be packed fairly close together in Maywood, but the extra space still affords homeowners room for gardening and modest yards. Common styles include Cape Cod and colonial revivals, along with split-levels. Traditional in its aesthetic and atmosphere, prospective homebuyers can even find traditional homes with Tudor accents. Prices range from $380,000 to $800,000, making it slightly more affordable than some of its neighboring communities.

Pleasant Avenue offers shopping and dining choices
Pleasant Avenue serves as the main commercial area of Maywood, with it featuring a number of small shops and restaurants. “Pleasant Avenue is our version of Main Street, and its very aptly named,” says Healey. “It’s small but features just about everything you need.” Seafood Gourmet is a small market with fresh fish selections and a casual restaurant out back. Amici’s serves up wood-fired pizzas, while Uptown Coffee Co. features fresh pastries, tea, and coffee. General grocery needs can be met at the local Target or at Maywood Marketplace. Bergen Town Center Mall features additional shopping and dining options. “One of the things that’s nice about Maywood is that it’s less commercial, in general,” says Ciccarelli. “You won’t find as many big chains in the town, which makes more room for mom-and-pops.”

Memorial School is a National Blue Ribbon School
Students can begin at Memorial School, which earns an A from Niche and is a National Blue Ribbon School. Maywood Avenue School, which earns an A-minus from Niche, serves grades fourth through eighth. Students finish up at B-plus rated Henry P. Becton High School. Students at Becton High can choose between clubs such as robotics, environmental club, and multicultural club.
