An upscale Milwaukee suburb

The City of Mequon is on the outskirts of Milwaukee, where upscale subdivisions meet farmland. "Mequon is known for being a pretty affluent area, and if you are looking for those bigger homes to the north of the city, it's pretty perfectly located," says Lindsay Czisny, a Sales Agent with Shorewest Realty specializing in the area. During the years following World War II, the suburb expanded rapidly, becoming what it is today: an enclave of high-end real estate within reach of fine dining, exclusive country clubs and some of the area’s strongest public schools. “It’s one of the most high-end places in the county, so it’s a good place to settle down,” says Realtor Amy Cottrell, who sells homes with Coldwell Banker Realty. Froedtert Community Hospital is one of the area's top employers, and its proximity to the neighborhoods is one of the area's main draws.

Mequon has a population of roughly 25,000. Its name is believed to have come from the Ojibwe word “Miguan,” which means ladle and may refer to the shape of the Milwaukee River. Before it was colonized by German settlers in the 1840s, the Menominee, Potawatomi and Sauk inhabited the area.

High-priced single-family homes

The median single-family home price is $610,000, well above the national median of about $400,000 and more than double the state median. Prices range from $360,000 for a mid-century ranch-style home to $2.4 million for an early-2000s New Traditional-style estate on three acres. The city is unique compared to Milwaukee in that it has spacious suburban lots set against a vast rural backdrop.

An A-plus-rated school district

Concordia University Wisconsin, a private Lutheran university with about 7,700 students, is one of the city’s top employers.

Outdoor spaces within walking distance

Multiple neighborhood parks and private country clubs with golf courses, pools and tennis courts are located throughout Mequon. Many parks are connected by the paved Ozaukee Interurban Trail, which runs 5.85 north to south through the city. There are also several nature preserves that contain walking trails.

Boat owners head to the marina in Port Washington to launch on Lake Michigan. Virmond Park overlooks the lake and has hiking trails, barbeque grills, tennis courts and public restrooms.

Further outside the Milwaukee Metropolitan Area, there is very little light pollution. “If you drive half an hour north, you can reach hunting areas, stars and places to go camping,” Czisny says.

Upscale dining options

Two clusters of restaurants are located along Mequon Road, which runs horizontally through the center of the city. These clusters include several fine dining options that serve classic American fare. There are also several fast-food franchises and casual local haunts that serve international cuisine. The mall also has several big-box clothing retailers and grocery stores.

Mequon comes to life in the summer when the area's farmers sell their wares at the weekly Thiensville's Village Market. Held from June to October, the market has live music and colorful stalls in the green space at Village Park. In the fall, nearby farms have apple picking.

Year-round events with music and food

The city has three major festivals. The Redbud Festival is held in May among the redbud trees of the Milwaukee RiverWalk. It’s a day of live music, plein-air artists and food trucks. Taste of Mequon draws up to 8,000 people to the greenspace and streets in front of City Hall each September for a day and evening of live music, food vendors and fireworks. City Hall also hosts the annual Winter Wonderland, where children can take pictures with Santa at the Isham Day House or Judah the Macabee in front of the menorah. Neighbors also decorate ornaments, sing carols and take horse-drawn carriage rides with hot chocolate.

For additional entertainment, the city has a multiplex movie theater with a restaurant and bar.

Getting around the area

Many residents commute to Milwaukee to work for companies like Johnson Controls, Rockwell Automation, and Northwestern Mutual. Downtown Milwaukee is 19 miles south of the city via Interstate 43. The Ozaukee County Express, known officially as the Route 143 commuter bus, takes residents to Milwaukee.

Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 26 miles south of the city via Interstate 43.

Mequon experiences harsh winters, so the city invests heavily in ice removal. There are also several private ice and removal services that some residents use to clear their driveways.

According to FBI crime data, the city’s violent and nonviolent crime rates are well below the state and national averages. Over the past half decade, property crime has dropped and violent crime has risen.

Mequon is located near the freeway, giving residents short commutes downtown.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
