Clearview Mall’s revival adds energy to New Metairie North
Driving into New Metairie North, you can’t help but notice a large, slowly turning art sculpture of George Rodrigue’s famous Blue Dog. Found in the neutral ground of Veterans Memorial Boulevard, the statue actually has three dogs painted in bright primary colors, one on each of its sides. This unique public art installation greets residents as they return home or run a errands along the neighborhood’s major thoroughfare. There’s plenty to be found there, too. The community is served by a Whole Foods Market, Clearview Mall, movie theatre, specialty shops and both fast-casual and quick-service restaurants. Should you decide to leave the car at home, several bus lines run through the area, making those errands a breeze. “There are lots of apartments and condos here,” says Eric Hernandez, Realtor with Nola Living Realty. “The single-family houses are collected on a few streets. The revitalization of Clearview Mall with the new Oschner Medical Complex may bring more people from the medical field into the neighborhood.” Convenient to the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway and Interstate 10, New Metairie North welcomes residents with its easy access to modern amenities in a retail-oriented area.
International Market and local diners offer global flavor
The New Metairie North neighborhood has several spots for groceries but one of the most interesting and popular is the International Market. Found one block from Veterans Boulevard, the family-owned and operated business is one of the most expansive you might ever enter. The space is warehouse-like with aisle after aisle of products from the Mediterranean, West Africa, Jamacia, Europe and Asia. But the store’s specialty is in ingredients and goods from India and the Middle East. Strolling through the shop, you’ll encounter Asian produce, frozen international dinners, Central American drinks, and sweets and spices from the world over. It also carries alcohol, perfumes, incense and housewares. Of course, if you’d rather have someone cook for you, there are plenty of dining options in the area. Atomic Burger’s flagship restaurant can be found in New Metairie North and serves a streamlined menu of American classics like hot dogs, fries, and, naturally, craft burgers. The beef is ground fresh in-house seven days a week, and the fries are hand-cut from whole potatoes. They even make molecular milkshakes by using liquid nitrogen to quickly chill the drink to the perfect frosty temperature. Opened in 2013 by two local brothers, the online magazine Thrillist has named Atomic as one of the best burgers in the nation. Tic-Toc Café is an old-fashioned diner painted its signature blue color. Open 24 hours a day all week, the restaurant proclaims itself “The place to be when everywhere else is closed.” If the blue brick exterior wasn’t enough to catch your eye, the business’s sign has a larger-than-life peacock attached to it too. But what keeps customers coming back is special touches like grilling the biscuits for a little extra flavor. If you’re up late and need a bite, try the Cajun seasoned pork chop, country fried steak or fried cheese curds while browsing the memorabilia-packed walls.
Single-family homes are rare but include a mix of styles
It’s true detached housing is limited here, but the homes that exist are well-maintained and built between the 1970s and today. A few come on the market each year, so keep your eyes peeled for your dream home here, whether it be a town house, Acadian, Tudor, contemporary or traditional design. Many of the homes in the neighborhood have storm shutters and quite a few are elevated as well. The price for a residence ranges from $77,000 for a one-bedroom and bath condo to $465,000 for a four-bedroom four-bath brick ranch-style house as of July 2023.
Neighborhood schools include a top-rated magnet elementary
Children in the neighborhood have a variety of educational options. Founded in 1939, the Metairie Academy for Advanced Studies was Jefferson Parish’s first magnet elementary school and it’s earned national recognition as a Blue Ribbon School. J.D. Meisler School works with middle school students to meet and exceed their potential. It encourages children to join athletic teams such as football, basketball or soccer and extracurricular activities such as yearbook, student council or band to learn social skills and build self-esteem. The Joseph C. Moscono School was recently re-named for a former principal who’d served the facility for 26 years. Before that, the school was known as Ella Dolhonde Elementary School. Whatever the name, the century-old institution has been recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the Department of Education.
