With the exception of a few small churches and a namesake park, Dixie Heights in Middletown, Ohio, is primarily residential. Homes, most of which were built during the height of the city's steel boom, branch off from Jewell Avenue. To the west, residents enjoy recreation along the Great Miami River, and Verity Parkway connects residents to the city's small downtown. Some of Dixie Heights's older homes have been replaced by vinyl-sided new construction, but some streets look more or less the same as they did a century ago. It's still the type of place where "everybody knows everybody," according to MidPointe Library's branch manager Cari Hillman, who adds that it's common to spot local politicians at Central Pastry Shop or downtown festivals. "For a community that's grown to 50,000-plus people, Middletown feels cozy and warm," she says. Most homes in Dixie Heights were built prior to 1950 when companies like AK Steel still thrived in Middletown. Prospective buyers will find modest Cape Cods and bungalows on uniform, quarter-acre lots. Attached garages are rare, given the age of most of the homes, and it's more common for cars to park in narrow driveways. Prices range between
