Homely town between Harrisburg and Hershey

Middletown is settled conveniently between Hershey and Harrisburg. Residents have abundant transportation options from the Harrisburg International Airport, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and an Amtrak stop. The borough is one of the oldest in Dauphin County, founded in 1755 by George Fisher. Middletown was named then for being centrally located in the middle of Carlisle and Lancaster. Now, it’s home to 9,500 residents and has a community-oriented atmosphere.

These newer homes carry three bedrooms and attached multi-car garages with prices ranging from $330,000 to $550,000. Colonials and Cape Cods are the most common styles connecting with the area’s historic charm. These are also three to four bedrooms but hold street parking. Prices for these homes range from $100,000 to $250,000.

Getting around southeast Pennsylvania

Transportation in Middletown is one of the community’s most significant assets. Interstate 76, or the PA Turnpike, runs from east and west throughout the state. Folks can take weekend trips to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia on this route. Middletown has an Amtrak station on the west end. Those needing to commute or looking for a weekend trip to Philly or New York can hop on the train. This route has stops throughout eastern PA, New Jersey and ending in New York City. Harrisburg International Airport sits 2 miles west. This airport offers nonstop services to 17 cities. Locals can connect to hundreds of other domestic and international destinations from there.

Pristine Pennsylvania parks

Middletown is home to seven public parks that are scattered throughout the community. “Then we have wonderful parks, especially Hoffer Park. They put in a new playground,” says Middletown Borough Secretary Grace Miller. “We do have boat access.” The PA Fish and Boat Commission recently reopened the boat access near Susquehanna Street Park. This allows residents an access point for unpowered boats such as kayaks and canoes. Hoffer Park is the largest at 10 acres and is located along Swatara Creek. This park has several courts, ideal for anyone looking for a competitive game. Kids can enjoy the playground and skateboarding area. Oak Hills and Frey Manor Park are both six acres. They have similar amenities, such as a basketball court, a baseball/softball field, and a playground.

Beloved local dining

“Kuppy’s Diner had an anniversary. Brownstone Café is a definite draw,” Miller says. “It’s an old bank turned restaurant. Alfred’s Victorian is another place they go to.” Kuppy’s Diner is a five-generation restaurant in the area since 1933. The retro diner spot serves breakfast and lunch dishes using original home-cooking recipes from the day they opened. Brownstone Café serves comfort classics. Locals love the restaurant's take on Chicken Pot Pie and Eggs Benedict. There are a couple of options to grab groceries. Giant is a regional chain on the community's east side. Karn Foods is a family-owned grocer located to the south.

Community events and attractions

“They do have fireworks on Labor Day,” Miller says. “They have Christmas tree lighting, annual craft fair, annual Halloween parade with trick or treating.” Chocolate lovers and amusement park enthusiasts will enjoy Hersheypark, which sits 9 miles northwest. During summer, nearly 70 attractions are open, and there’s plenty of opportunity to get sweet treats. The state capital, Harrisburg, is home to many museums. Locals can learn about the culture of Pennsylvania and its history.
