A small community with a rich industrial history
Located on both sides of a millpond running through Middlesex County, the Central Jersey borough of Milltown possesses a unique historical charm that defines this town’s image and lifestyle. Milltown’s unique name tells a story of 200 years of industrial growth, starting with the construction of a gristmill in 1769 and culminating with the presence of a Michelin factory during the 1900s. “The Michelin tire company had a huge effect on Milltown. It was so successful that Michelin started building homes,” says RE/MAX Realtor Mark J. Schmidt, a lifelong resident of central New Jersey, selling homes across the region for nearly two decades. “Michelin definitely left their mark in their area.” With various vintage houses and historic lofts, in addition to recently developed retail establishments, Milltown offers both the charm of a storied small town and the amenities of a growing suburb just off the New Jersey Turnpike.

Housing built for early 20th century industrial workers still stands today
“Michelin built 250 homes in the area for their employees, and all of them are still standing and lived in today,” Schmidt says. Many of the town’s buildings date to the first decades of the 20th century, including single-family homes and scores of bungalows and colonials built as housing for Milltown’s workers. The town’s initial housing plots mix with several ranch styles and colonials from the 1950s through the ’70s. However, several contemporary colonials and bungalows were built in the 21st century. The legacy of industry has also affected shared housing, with the historic Milltown India Rubber Factory being transformed into condominiums. Homes typically cost between $350,000 and $600,000.

Students attend Milltown Public Schools
Milltown has its own small school system, Milltown Public Schools, which Niche gave an overall C-plus. Students typically kickstart their education at Parkview School, which has a student-to-teacher ratio of 11-to-1 and a C-plus on Niche. Students advance to Joyce Kilmer School for middle school education. Niche gave the school a B-minus. To earn their degrees, students head to Spotswood High School. High schoolers can join various extracurriculars, like international club, drama club and the Charger Pride Alliance. Niche gave the high school an overall B-plus.

Fishing at Mill Pond and local sports at Crabiel
Milltown offers residents several parks and green spaces to enjoy a day outside. Mill Pond Park sits along Westons Mill Pond’s southern end, offering a prime spot for fishing and waterside hikes. Plus, the park features picnic groves, benches and a rain garden. Northern Milltown is home to David B. Crabiel Park, which includes a baseball field, soccer field and a small playground with rock climbing; this park also hosts several fireworks nights in the summer. Locals also enjoy the sports facilities at Gloria Bradford Borough Park, the courts at Pardun Tennis Facility and more fishing on the Lawrence Brook Watershed at Brook Park.

Shopping at Ryders Crossing and dining at Heritage Plaza
Milltown has transformed into a retail center with several shopping centers and restaurants. At the Ryders Crossing shopping center, families enjoy indoor trampolines, fitness classes and dodgeball at the Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park. This shopping center features well-known stores, like Target, CVS and Home Depot. Heritage Plaza packs quite a few service businesses and tasty restaurants into its small strip of brick-clad storefronts. Fresco Steak & Seafood Grill has an impressive menu of seafood dishes, like clams and calamari, and Italian classics, such as pasta and risotto. Next door, Lox Stock & Deli specializes in flavor-packed corned beef and pastrami sandwiches and other kosher eats. At the same time, Bagel Bazaar offers all sorts of bagel options, including maple bacon egg, asiago cheese, cheddar habanera and much more.

Making the trek into New York
Because of Milltown’s proximity to New Brunswick, commuters can drive into the “Hub City” and catch a train to New York’s Pennsylvania Station for an hour-long commute. For those who enjoy scenic drives past North Jersey’s biggest cities and into New York, the New Jersey Turnpike lands drivers in the heart of Manhattan within an hour, just as Interstate 95 provides access to Philadelphia in nearly the same amount of time. Plus, the community is served by the NJ Transit system, so bus stops line Main Street. The Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is about 4 miles away if locals need to reach a doctor. The Newark Liberty International Airport is about 25 miles away.
