Hampton Heights offers its residents quiet streets, budget-friendly housing and easy access to all amenities, including schools and two churches. The neighborhood is primarily residential, with some businesses along Hampton Avenue. Not much traffic goes through the neighborhood, though, so residents can enjoy some tranquility. “People like it here because everything they need is close,” says Yeng Vang, a Realtor with Creative Results who lives in the area and has sold about 10 homes in Hampton Heights. “They can get to major destinations easily. Downtown Milwaukee is only 15 minutes away.”
Features home styles through the decades
Hampton Heights’ wide, mostly gridded streets —some of which need repair—are lined with trees and sidewalks. Homes in the neighborhood’s western section back up to alleys with detached garages and sheds, while residents living east of the Lincoln Creek waterway enjoy larger, more spaced out and verdant lots. Ranch-style homes from the mid-to-late 20th century predominate here — many with smaller, linear floor plans and aluminum siding in the post-World War II style. Older homes in the neighborhood range from 1920s bungalows and ‘30s Tudors to 1950s Cape Cods. List prices in the community run from $52,000 to $287,000. For a completely remodeled, three-bedroom bungalow with about 1,200 square feet, the buyer would pay around $200,000. However, a two-bedroom ranch-style home just over 1,100 square feet will run less than $100,000, though that often means fewer recent updates.

For groceries, residents can go to Foodtown supermarket. Hampton Heights has several eateries that are considered local favorites, including Hup’s Pizza. This decades-old establishment only accepts cash and is hard to miss; it’s the red-and-green shack alongside Hampton Avenue. Just a couple blocks down from Hup’s is Express Gyro, which serves everything from burgers to hot dogs to sandwiches and, of course, gyros. They also sell milkshakes and malts.

Residents can also travel 11 miles via West Hampton Avenue to the shore at McKinley Beach.
