Street parties are a thing in Lyons Park
Live oak trees bring some gravitas to Lyons Park, which is part of the Old Dauphin Way Historic District west of downtown. But it’s the eclectic century-old homes – picture bright facades and inviting porches – that bring the sense of fun. And extroverts take note: residential street parties are a thing. The nearby Bragg-Mitchell Mansion sets the area’s festive tone. “The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion is an old historic mansion,” says Devin Schaff, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Mobile and a 17-year Mobile resident. “Tons of people get married there and have events on the front lawn.” Also in the neighborhood mix are churches, a private school and several hospitals, which line Springhill Avenue.
Homes shaded by the 100 + year old live oak trees are very common in the lush Lyons Park area.

Families and young professionals fill century-old homes
Bright Craftsman-style homes, bungalows and American foursquares exude charm across Lyons Park, where sidewalks link neighbors under the shade of live oaks and the occasional palm – this place is ready for a neighborhood cocktail party. “Most of them are 100 to 150 years old and craftsman style homes,” says Schaff, but “there are no new subdivisions, it’s built out.” Home prices range from $345,000 for a three-bedroom Craftsman-style cottage built in 1926 to $625,000 for a five-bedroom foursquare built in 1908 – which only spent four days on the market. “Everything behind us and to the east and west of us is residential, and most are families and children,” says Waylon Bailey, general manager of Soul Caffeine, a coffee shop occupying a small island of commercial businesses here. “It tends to be a demographic on the younger side, and young professionals.”

Serving great coffee and nourishing souls is the goal at Soul Caffeine. “We love coffee, and we love people, and that’s where the soul came from,” says Bailey, who notes that the shop has drinks ready-to-go beforehand for its regulars. “Seventy-five to 80% of our business is people in the neighborhood walking in.” There are several longtime favorite restaurants near Lyons Park too, including Butch Cassidy Cafe, renowned for its burgers, Cammie's Old Dutch Ice Cream Shoppe and Hart’s Fried Chicken. A Winn-Dixie supermarket is on Highway 90 just south of the neighborhood.

Relax on benches at the Children’s Park
Life-size sculptures of whimsical animals and playful kids catch the eye at Geri Moulton Children's Park, which fronts the University of South Alabama’s Health Children's & Women's Hospital on Springhill Avenue. The park is a scenic complement to the top-notch health care provided inside. “Sometimes such care can come outside the walls of a hospital, medical office or cancer center,” said Debbie Browning, M.S.N., RN, CEO of USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital. “Sometimes, it’s offered through a quiet spot that gives someone time for peaceful reflection in a natural setting.” A walking path encircles a sparkling lake at nearby Tricentennial Park, which also has a splash pad and exercise stations.
