Community revitalization efforts are kicking off
Family is important in Summerville, a neighborhood within the community of Toulminville about 4 miles northwest of downtown Mobile. Neighbors have known each other for years and many are relatives with strong family ties. It was a point of community pride in 2023 when the boyhood home of baseball great Henry “Hank” Aaron was returned to Toulminville – on an enormous moving truck – from its perch 10 miles away beside Hank Aaron Stadium. It’s a symbolic first step for efforts to revitalize the neighborhood. Pursuant to the Toulminville Neighborhood Plan, the city partnered with community members in 2023 to encourage economic development and support positive change, from tackling the problem of abandoned buildings and cars to supporting programs at local community centers. The first two workshops under the initiative drew almost 150 community members and city partners.

Community centers have numerous offerings for kids and adults
Programming for kids and adults is robust at Dotch Community Center and the surrounding Trinity Park. Outside, kids can test their Hank Aaron skills at the baseball field and play games on the football field while younger kids clamber on the playground. The options are plentiful inside too. “We have basic games,” says Garbutt. “A pool table, ping pong tables. Video games and Wii. We’ve got board games.” Kids can also stop by for computer training. Line dancing and Zumba classes are popular with adults and locals come here to walk in the morning. In summer the park hosts a summer camp for the kids, and on Saturdays the pool opens for swimming and recreation, with a lifeguard on duty. “We do great here,” says Garbutt. “The mayor is doing a good job with the centers. It’s a real good atmosphere.”
