Entertainment and local employers 27 miles from Pittsburgh
Residents settle in Monongahela, 27 miles from Pittsburgh, for accessibility to local employers but stay for the community attractions and events. “People move here, I would say, either for jobs or to be closer to the river,” says Devie Rollison, Realtor with Realty ONE Group. “There are a few mills here still left in production in Mon Valley.” The Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital and the steel mills along the river are big employers in the city. Residents are always looking to engage their community and began a Monongahela Main Street Program to update the business district through community engagement and historic preservation. “It is such a cool vibe! They have revitalized their downtown business district and added some pretty cool attractions,” says Rollison. Residents will see historical markers throughout the city, from Whiskey Point, where the Whiskey Rebellion of 1791 came to a head, to ancient Native American burial mounds. Monongahela was established in 1769, making the area around 255 years old and the oldest city in the Monongahela Valley.

Family-owned Italian eateries and Fleatique on the Mon
Residents pour over antiques on Main Street during Fleatique on the Mon, the largest street sale in Southwestern Pennsylvania. After shopping, locals dine at Lenzi’s Restaurant, a small, family-run Italian place that has been a staple in the community since the 1940s. Angelo’s II Bar & Restaurant, another Italian eatery, is known for elaborate holiday decorations. For a hearty meal during a lunch break, residents visit Valley Pho, near Penn Highlands Hospital. The Vietnamese restaurant is known for its egg rolls and fried rice. Groceries are purchased at Cox Market or Giant Eagle Supermarket.

Residents visit the Monongahela Aquatorium and the Demon House
The Monongahela Aquatorium stretches into the Monongahela River and bleachers filled with locals descend toward the riverbank as residents watch the Fourth of July fireworks, summer concerts, dog shows and other performances. In September, ghosts stir within the McCue Mansion, or the Demon House, a home built on unmarked graves where seven men mysteriously disappeared. The Demon House has skeletons at every turn and visitors are taken on a haunted tour of the grounds. The Monongahela Area Library hosts an Anything Goes Book Club, where attendees may discuss and review the book they’re reading. Residents attend religious services at The Church of Jesus Christ, Grace Lutheran Church, St. Andrew the Apostle Parish and others in the area.

Historic parks serve as local community spaces
Many families from Val Camonica in Lombardy, Italy emigrated to the Monongahela Valley, opening restaurants like Lenzi’s and making a new life for themselves. However, their connection to Val Camonica was not forgotten, and in 2014, relatives of the emigrated families came to visit Monongahela. A Sister City sign commemorates the event in Chess Park. The park is a common meeting place for city locals, with a War Memorial and gazebo. In June, the Monongahela Farmers Market has live music and local vendors from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Friday at Chess Park. Beside two baseball fields and a playground, Mounds Park marks the site of two Native American Burial Mounds. Fishing and boating are popular pastimes for those living on the Monongahela River, and the area has a boat ramp and a kayak launch.

Important to know
While flooding does occur in the area after heavy rainfall, the Pittsburgh Engineer District will remove Lower Mon Dam 3 to help mitigate this issue. “I do know the river will get quite high,” says Rollison “Lock 3 is supposed to be removed, so the water table is expected to fall by about 3 feet.”
