Close-knit community in Monsey with synoogues and kosher grocers
The beauty of Monsey, 40 miles from New York City, is not found just in its rolling hills and marshes. Monsey is a community of people, many of whom share a common heritage, food traditions, language and religion. “People that grew up in this area want to live here,” says Abraham Spitzer, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Commercial, who has been working there for 8 years. “It’s definitely more affordable than the city. People come here because there’s more grass, more trees than in the city.” The area was little more than a one-stoplight hamlet until the early 1950s when housing prices started skyrocketing in New York City, and families began leaving the city’s urban boroughs searching for affordable and quiet rural neighborhoods. Today, Monsey is home to scores of synagogues and kosher food stores.
Private and public schools available for kindergarten through 12th grade
The Monsey area is served by the East Ramapo Central School District, which receives a C-minus from Niche. Most children attend Margetts Elementary School for kindergarten through third grade and Elmwood Elementary School for fourth through sixth grade. Both schools get a C-minus. Students advance to Chestnut Ridge Middle School, which also receives a C-minus for seventh through eighth grade and Spring Valley High School for ninth through 12th grade, which gets a C-plus. The Spring Valley High School Counseling Department helps students build resumes, apply for colleges, and find jobs after high school. Most students attend private Jewish schools, such as Beth Rochel School, an unrated Kindergarten through 12th-grade all-girl institution, and Yeshiva of Spring Valley, an unrated Kindergarten through eighth-grade elementary school.
Commuters use state highways and trains
Many interstate and state highways, like the Palisades Parkway and the New York State Thruway, connect New York City and Monsey, allowing commuters to reach the city in an hour or less. Buses from Monsey Park & Ride can take commuters into White Plains, where they catch a train to New York City in over two hours. Commuters may also catch the PASC train at the Spring Valley train station, two miles away, and arrive at the Secaucus Junction Station in just over an hour. From there, they may transfer to most commuter rail lines.“Monsey used to feel like a small hamlet, but today, it’s a much bigger town. There are a lot more people,” says Naomi Streicher, a Realtor with Q Home Sales, who grew up in the neighborhood. “If you live near the center of Monsey, you don’t need a car.” Monsey has sidewalks in high-traffic areas, and residents can access shopping, dining, recreation and public transportation. LaGuardia International Airport is 34 miles away. Good Samaritan Hospital is 4 miles away for emergency services.
Pick fresh produce on local farms and hike in town parks
Greenery is interlaced with Monsey’s homes and shopping areas. Manny Welder Park has lighted tennis and handball courts, four sports fields and a playground. Monsey Glen County Park is a favorite place to walk, with 25 acres to explore. Just outside the community, West Maple Farm sits on 15 acres of farmland, allowing hands-on experiences such as picking fresh blueberries and vegetables, feeding chickens, and visiting with cows, sheep and other farm animals. Demarest Farms, 9 miles away, is a local family-owned, seasonal farm allowing visitors to pick peaches and apples.
Shopping and dining on Main Street
“Main Street is no longer a quiet little strip. Now you can get almost everything you need there or at one of the nearby shopping centers in Monsey,” says Streicher. The Shoppers Haven Mall, just off Main Street, has over 20 shops and services, including Rockland Kosher Supermarket and R-Kafe, a kosher restaurant. For more kosher restaurants, Monsey BBQ & Grill serves American and Middle Eastern comfort food. Primavera Café & Restaurant has a mix of Mexican and Italian fare. Evergreen Kosher Market is further down Main Street for groceries. Big-box stores like Lowe’s and Costco Wholesale are in Spring Valley, 3 miles away.
Upscale single-family homes with apartments for rent
Linear and winding roads with occasional sidewalks are lined with large homes in the New Traditional, split-level and postmodern styles. Prices vary depending on size. Homes with five bedrooms or less range from $995,000 to $1.3 million, while homes with five or more bedrooms range from $1.8 to $2.08 million. Townhouses and condos range from $775,000 to $1.3 million. Over 60% of Monsey residents rent, and 34% of the property is apartment buildings. The CAP Index crime score is a 6 out of 10. The national average is 4.
Ramapo Parks & Recreation hosts seasonal events
In June, a fireworks display paints the sky after a New York Boulder game to celebrate Ramapo Day, 6 miles away at Clover Stadium. The Town of Ramapo Parks & Recreation Department hosts seasonal and holiday events throughout the area. Egg hunts are conducted in the spring, while Halloween parties at pumpkin patches are reserved for the fall. During the summer months, the department hosts summer camps.
