Varied architectural style with a diverse history
The Garden District’s architectural style is both historic and diverse. “With historical designation, we aren’t allowed to build new properties,” says Cadden. “Houses here are at least 50 to 60 years old with numerous properties from the early 1900s still intact.” Towering oak trees sit on sidewalk-lined streets in front of classic American Craftsman-style homes and Queen Anne revivals. Homebuyers can also find cozy bungalows and Tudor-style cottages scattered throughout the neighborhood. Housing prices range from $100,000 to 250,000.

Bellinger Hill Park sits in the middle of the Garden District and offers year-round outdoor recreation. In the northern part of the neighborhood, the Downtown Branch YMCA holds numerous indoor activities, including adult basketball and personal training programs. History buffs can visit the Governor’s Mansion and explore the 116-year-old building via public tours. The Mansion is home to the governor and the first family and is protected by the state of Alabama.
Emerging commercial opportunities
Historically, the Garden District has been strictly residential to preserve the significant houses and architecture that make up the neighborhood. However, recent efforts have sought to shift the district in a more commercial direction. “In order to modernize, you have to start gearing away from a strictly residential space,” says Cadden. “We are pushing for an expansion into tiny restaurants and coffee shops within the neighborhood.” One example of this shift is the 1616 House, a luxury wedding and special events venue in a repurposed mansion from 1915. The house maintains the historic elements of the building while providing a space for the community to come together. Restaurants can be found along the neighborhood’s western border, including J.W. Beverette’s Soul Food, which serves classic southern cuisine and home-cooked recipes. Residents can head to the Faircourt Shopping Center south of the neighborhood to shop for groceries at Meat City Market.

Community Engagement
The Garden District Preservation Association (GDPA) is active in the neighborhood and hosts events ranging from neighborhood clean-ups to pet parades. Residents can meet with the association on the first Monday of every month to discuss neighborhood news, events, and policies. In the spring and fall, the GDPA hosts potluck picnics, bringing the whole community together with food, live music, and other festivities.
