Active community centers and exploring areas near the Alabama River
The northern section of the neighborhood is rich in natural beauty. Gun Island Chute, a section of Alabama River, is a popular site for paddleboarding and kayaking. It's the spot for the annual Gun Island Chute Stand-Up Paddleboard Cup, a paddleboarding race. In addition to paddleboards, competitors can register to race in kayaks. Gun Island Chute is also a popular fishing site, with local anglers catching spotted bass, bluegill and common carp. Tallapoosa River also weaves its way through North Montgomery. Adjacent to the zoo is Chisholm Park and Community Center. The park offers a large multipurpose field, playground and baseball fields. The recreation center features a gym, a large meeting room, a game room and an arts and crafts area. Children can also attend after-school and summer programs at the center.
Sheridan Heights Community Center is also within North Montgomery, with several indoor and outdoor amenities. There's a large gym, game room, arts and crafts and meeting spaces. Residents can go for a dip at the center's outdoor swimming pool or practice their swing at the two lit softball fields. A paved walking path weaves around a sizeable multipurpose field, and there's also a blacktop for basketball, tennis courts and a sizable playground.
Popular furniture stores and craft spaces at Longleaf Wood Shop
Aw Shucks Oyster Bar and Café is a local favorite, serving casual seafood stables like fried oysters and catfish. There are also two popular furniture stores in the area: American Oak and More and Kyser Fine Furnishings. Longleaf Wood Shop offers more than custom-made charcuterie boards and bowls — it provides a space for woodwork and DIY enthusiasts of all skill levels to craft their wares. The space hosts classes on wood shop basics, wood turning, wood cutting and more. If flowers are your forte, Caffco Floral Outlet will be your spot.
