Morenci's community and busy business district are growing
Agriculture has always been a major industry in Morenci, a former frontier town on the Michigan-Ohio border. Now, the cannabis industry adds to the city's business district, revitalizing the local economy. This boom has allowed the city to focus on improving the downtown area and supporting the community. "There's just a lot of positive momentum in Morenci," says Heather Sarnac, Morenci's community and economic development director. "Our community is very active, and we're always looking to grow in ways that support our businesses, residents and schools." Locals like to stay connected through school events, annual celebrations and friendly conversations in the neighborhood. "We have people who have lived here for multiple generations, but we're also a town that welcomes new faces," Sarnac says. "It's exciting to see new people and to help them get involved."

Downtown stays local, while the business district focuses on tourism
Morenci has a small but mighty downtown. North Street Pub stays busy throughout the week with trivia nights, karaoke and Saturday night jams. Village Inn is a cozy breakfast diner, while The Dairy Depot seasonally sells ice cream from a small brick-red barn. Downtown's social district allows people to enjoy alcoholic beverages outdoors while exploring local businesses. The Rex Theatre hosts rock concerts and comedy shows, and the Stair District Library is a hub for special exhibits. The closest grocery stores are about 18 miles away in Adrian.
Five marijuana dispensaries on the east side of town create Morenci's business district. "It helps them collaborate and bring business to the same area," Sarnac says. "It also allows our community and our downtown to keep a separate identity." Marijuana prices are lower in Michigan than in Ohio, and dispensaries attract buyers from across the border. Despite changes in marijuana-related legislation in the neighboring state, Sarnac says Morenci's business and consumer interests remain stable.

The community is primarily residential. Cape Cods, ranch-style houses and American Foursquares are common. Some two-story homes have unique designs, like Tudor-inspired half-timbering. Prices typically range between $100,000 and $275,000, although smaller bungalows and investment properties cost between $30,000 and $90,000. Neighbors are close, but lots are large with sizeable lawns. Roads are lined with shade trees and sidewalks. Houses near the business district experience higher traffic and noise, as well as the smell of marijuana, as shoppers travel through the area. New construction may be coming to the city center, as officials have proposed building condos where the former middle school was located.

The city supports student-led endeavors
"There's such a strong relationship between our schools and our city," Sarnac says. "We take every opportunity to collaborate." Students start at Morenci Elementary School, with a C-plus rating on Niche and a mentorship program with local high schoolers. Morenci's combined middle and high school has a B-minus rating and holds an annual student-led farmers market. With support from the city, students organize all aspects of the market, including finding vendors, advertising the event and growing plants to sell.

Summer and fall events celebrate community and good weather
The Morenci Downtown Development Authority plans the city's annual events, and the lineup grows each year. "We're starting a monthly summer Saturday event, an all-day family event with a different theme each month," Sarnac says. Summer Saturdays include various kid-friendly activities, live concerts and a 5k run. Fall Fest is one of the community's largest events. Local restaurants design seasonal menus, and vendors sell autumn-themed goods. The Morenci Town & Country Festival is another favorite, as families gather for a Daddy-Daughter dance, pageant and fireworks display.
Locals use major roads to reach bigger cities
Most residents drive, using roads like Main Street to get around. South East Street connects to Highway 20, 4 miles south, leading directly into Toledo. However, most people travel to Adrian to reach nearby shopping, dining and healthcare services. Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport is 30 miles from the community.
