Small town with much going on

Mount Joy offers a quaint setting that defines many American small towns. It includes a small, charming, downtown area complete with a Main Street that runs between rows of historic buildings housing both homes and businesses. An important landmark here is the Mount Joy Monument situated near the corner of East Main and Barbara streets. The monument is a model replica of the ship that inspired this borough’s name and brought over the settlers who came to this community only a few centuries ago. “Mount Joy is a nice little town,” says Rose Madar, a realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Homesale Realty. She likens the borough to similarly picturesque Marietta, Mount Joy’s Lancaster County neighbor to the south. Madar touts the range of restaurants and shops and says the borough also has direct connections to some of the larger locales in the region. “You’re close to the highway, so there’s easy access to all your major areas,” Madar says.

Colonials and more

Like much of Lancaster County — and this section of the East Coast — colonial homes are common here. In addition, Mount Joy also features a variety of attached and detached homes, which are common to this region. Price points here fall mostly within the $160,000 to $550,000 range, with several homes on the lower end of that scale being marketed as opportunities for renovations. One two-story, five-bedroom colonial with a small roof covered entrance and extra features like a backyard pool can go for $550,000. A two-story and three-bedroom red brick colonial on Main Street with a covered porch that spans the front of the building can go for $350,000. A modern red-brick townhouse with three bedrooms will go for $300,000. Other varieties include a single-story, two-bedroom cottage with wood siding that can go for $175,000, and a three-story and six-bedroom Tudor style with red brick siding and high-pitched gabled roofs can go for $412,500.

Adventures at Bube's Brewery

One popular point of interest is Bube’s Brewery on North Market Street, which isn’t simply another microbrewery. The establishment gets its name from Alois Bube, a German immigrant who started the business in the 1870s amid a brewery boom at the time significantly driven by makers of German-style lagers. “It’s the only lager brewery from the 1800s still intact in the U.S. It goes back to an earlier era of lots of small, local breweries. They do all sorts of things there. Great foods and great beer,” says Joel Cliff, director of communications and advocacy for the private nonprofit Discover Lancaster. Bube’s includes some restaurants, the Catacombs and the Bottling Works. The Catacombs is located below the street level in the brewery’s aging cellars and, as the name suggests, offers a dining space enclosed by walls and an arched ceiling made of stone. The entertainment there includes interactive meals with murder mysteries, and the establishment includes a small hotel component for those interested in overnight stays. Other dining choices in the borough includes Amato’s Wood Fire Pizza & Italian Restaurant on West Main and Gus’s Keystone Family Restaurant, which offers breakfast and an array of seafood.
