When people think of Mount Washington, they think of the water tower. Built in 1939 and standing at 198 feet, the Art Deco structure holds three million gallons and is still operated by the Greater Cincinnati Water Works today. Its rotating light can be seen from downtown and provides a signal for planes at nearby Lunken Airfield. More than that, it’s a symbol of the neighborhood and serves as a gathering place for the community. “We’re known for the water tower, and we light it every day of the year,” says Realtor Bob Wetterer, a 45-year local. “The community has the annual Holiday Walk through that business district, the Pumpkin Chuck at nearby Stanbery Park and the Independence Day Parade.” The Cincinnati Public Library’s local branch has crochet clubs, story readings and local performances.
Cape Cods, ranch-styles and contemporary homes
Like much of Cincinnati, 1950s Cape Cods and brick ranch-styles are at the core of this neighborhood. Roomy lawns and attached garages, though, make Mount Washington a unique place to be — just far enough from the city that residents have a little extra space. Contemporary two-stories and new builds are also different, added to the northeast side of the neighborhood. Prices depend on built year and number of renovations, but the typical two-bedroom will go from $175,000 to $250,000. Three-bedrooms can also be found in the upper 200s.

Cincinnati City School District
“A lot of young families are moving to Mount Washington because of Sands Montessori Elementary, the number one Montessori school in the city,” says 30-year Realtor Bob Wetterer of Comey and Shepherd. The school is rated B-plus by Niche and is in the northern portion of the neighborhood. They could also go to B-minus-rated Mount Washington Elementary, only a mile away. Later, they can travel about eight miles to Walnut Hills High, given an A-plus by Niche. This is the third-best public high school in Ohio, so it’s worth the trip for many parents.
California Woods and Stanbery Park
Home to 53 species of trees and 200-plus species of herbs, hikers can weave through the woods and creek at California Woods Nature Preserve. They might also fish on the Little Miami River or watch the tree line at Magrish Preserve, an Important Birding Area. To the northeast, 125-acre Stanbery Park has one of Cincinnati parks' most extensive trail systems, and its Plush Pavilion has frequent outdoor concerts. “Our recreation center is also one of the best in Cincinnati,” adds Realtor Bob Wetterer, “and you’re only 10 minutes from the Little Miami Bike Trail, which goes all the way to Xenia, Ohio.”

Local favorites at Ramundo’s and Gold Star
In the northern reaches of Mount Washington, Ramundo’s Pizzeria has served this community the “New York slice” for nearly 25 years, and LaRosa’s Pizza sponsors community-led spaghetti dinners. The original location of Gold Star is nearby, too, for Cincinnati-style spaghetti chili or cheese coneys. Right next door, shoppers can cross off that grocery list at Kroger, or they might drive three miles down the hill to Macy’s.

Beechmont Avenue and I-275
While most of the town is walkable, commuters have a 10-mile drive to Great American Ball Park and downtown Cincinnati. They’ll use Beechmont Avenue to get across the Little Miami and, afterward, hop onto Route 50. Another option is I-275, south of the neighborhood, where they can merge onto I-471 through Newport.
