Mountain View is a rural village at the foot of the world’s most active volcano
Mountain View is a rural community that sits at the foot of two towering volcanic mountains on the Island of Hawaii, also known as The Big Island. It’s surrounded by farmland and tropical rainforests, about 15 miles from the coastal town of Hilo. Most homes occupy large, wooded lots on narrow country lanes that cut through lush, tropical vegetation. The area is known for heavy rains and cooler temperatures compared to other parts of the island. “I love it here," says Amy Flanders, an agent at Equity Hawaii Real Estate who lives in the Mountain View area. "It’s gorgeous, and the weather is perfect. It’s cooler and crisper at this elevation, and it’s great for gardening. We’ve been growing papayas, pineapples and fruit trees.”

Homes tucked away on country lanes in dense tropical forests
Mountain View, mostly constructed after 1970, offers a mix of cabins, cottages and ranch-style homes nestled in the jungles that wrap around the base of the Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanoes. Lot sizes are typically large, offering plenty of peace and quiet, far from the hustle and bustle of the nearest city. The median home price here is about $400,000, putting it more than 50% lower than the statewide median. Around 80% of residents are homeowners. “There’s a good range of homes, including some large agricultural properties. And it’s still affordable. It’s way more affordable than if you live on the other side of the island,” Flanders says.

There are a couple restaurants and coffee shops on Old Volcano Road
There are a handful of shops and restaurants on Old Volcano Road. Residents can pick up a pie from Frankie’s Pizza, satisfy their sweet tooth at Mountain View Bakery or order an espresso at Koana Retail. For something quick, there’s also Saucy Mama’s food truck, known for its pork tacos and rotating weekly specials. This little shopping district is rounded out by a reptile store, a convenience store and a post office. For groceries, residents can head about 7 miles east to Keaau. It has a Foodland grocery store, an organic grocer and a Mexican grocer. For everything else, it’s just a few more miles to Hilo. “The location is great. You can get to town really easily, but it’s still remote and quiet out here,” Flanders says.

Getting around The Big Island on Route 11
State Route 11, also known as Hawaii Belt Road, is the main road in and out of Mountain View. Residents can take Route 11 to Hilo, or west all the way to Kahaluu-Keauhou on the opposite side of the island. There’s no public transportation in Mountain View, so residents will likely need a car to get around. The nearest large airport and major hospital are 15 miles away in Hilo.
