Desirable suburbia with city convenience
Those who move to Munster find it hard to leave, due to a combination of great schools, quiet residential roads and easy access into Chicago. “A lot of people relocate to Munster from the city, especially if they have families, because it’s just a 35-minute commute to Chicago,” says Brooke Metz, a team leader at eXp Realty, LLC with a decade of experience in northern Indiana. “It’s also one of the more walkable areas in the state, despite being flanked by several main roads that lead to the Interstate 94 expressway.” Residents in this suburb have the amenities of a big city and the open green space of a picturesque town, as Centennial Park offers fresh air activities and as an escape from the bustle.

From brick ranch homes to contemporary estates
Sidewalks weave throughout the residential areas of Munster, from the gridded streets near Interstate 94 to the more spacious lots south of Ridge Road. “The further south from I-94 you go, the newer and more exclusive the homes become. Beautiful brick ranch homes are closer to the expressway, while a few high-end subdivisions like Park West are on the south side,” Metz says. Ranch and raised ranch houses with 1,000 to 2,000 square feet of space typically range from $175,000 to $350,000. Bi-levels and colonials, some with Tudor Revival elements and stone accents can grow in size up to 3,000 square feet and in price upwards of $450,000. Contemporary and traditional homes that boast decorative brick exteriors range from $500,000 to more than $1 million, with the newer and larger 7,000-square-foot estates breaking the million-dollar price point. “Since Munster is landlocked, new construction is becoming limited to rehabs and remodels,” Metz adds.
Rows of homes in Munster often have mature trees and spacious yards.

No. 1 public schools in Lake County
The School Town of Munster is one of the highest-rated districts in the state, so it’s no surprise that Niche ranks the public schools in Munster as the No. 1 best elementary, middle and high schools in all of Lake County. “Munster also has great athletics, so a lot of people move over the border specifically for the schools,” Metz says. Students can begin at Frank H. Hammond Elementary, which receives an A Niche grade. They can progress to Wilbur Wright Middle, graded an A-minus. Niche also grades Munster High School an A-plus and ranks it among the top public high schools in Indiana for both college prep and STEM. Parents looking to enroll their children in private school also have options, as St. Thomas More School provides a Catholic education with an emphasis on the Arts for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
Frank H Hammond has almost 700 students with an overall rating of A from Niche.
Wilbur Wright Middle School boasts an A rating on Niche making it the best in the county.
Munster High School has 1500 students with an A rating making it the best in the county.

Fresh air and community events at Centennial Park
Munster residents have their choice of parks to enjoy. Riverside Park is nestled on the Little Calumet River, where locals can spot muskrats, birds and beavers. Centennial Park, which has won awards for its sustainable design elements, offers a 9-hole golf course, tennis courts, a fishing pond and a 3-acre dog park. There’s also a 2000-seat outdoor amphitheater that hosts several events throughout the year like the Munster Music Festival and Grape Escape Wine Festival. “The farmers market is also held there every weekend, and they put on an amazing fourth of July celebration,” Metz adds. “Developers are also adding in some shops and restaurants nearby that will be walkable from the park.” If families want a subtler outdoor adventure, they can head to the playgrounds and athletic fields at Grove Park and Beech Park.
Riverside park is just outside of Munster in Hammond but it is perfect place for a scenic walk.

Local shopping and dining along Calumet Ave
When it’s time to check items off the grocery list, residents head to Jewel-Osco centrally located off Calumet Avenue. New to Munster and locally-owned, Beam Me Up Coffee Co brews sustainable coffee. Kitaro Surf & Turf & Sushi is a go-to for Japanese cuisine. When feeling boozy, locals can clink their margarita glasses at Casa Del Mar. And for Sunday brunch, Harvest Room offers fresh, farm-to-table favorites including chicken and waffles. “More upscale dining experiences happen at Rosebud Steakhouse and Fiori Italian,” Metz adds.

New retail developments by Centennial Park
“Since Munster has so many transplants from bigger cities, more restaurants and shops are coming in. They’re developing a plaza south of Centennial Park that will have a cigar lounge and a wine bar.” Big-name shopping is nearby as well, with stores like Target and Walmart right off the interstate.
Residents of Munster love shopping at the local Target.

Riding I-94 or the Amtrak into Chicago
When Munster residents need to commute into Chicago, they can take Interstate 94 north for about 30 miles to land in the city. The Dyer Amtrak station has a train that heads into Chicago once in the morning and arrives from the city once in the afternoon.
