Suburban living blocks from the Intracoastal Waterway
With a name like Tanglewood, it’s ironic that most of the streets in this small neighborhood between the Wilmington city limits and Myrtle Grove are stick-straight and neatly arranged. It does, however, have plenty of trees. This community, resting along Whiskey Creek near the Intracoastal Waterway, draws in people looking for a blend of coastal living and suburban convenience. “Wilmingtonians want to be in the best location,” says Dan Barentine, a broker with Nest Realty and a longtime Wilmingtonian. “People work from home and want to be on the beach or on the water.” Homes here are a short distance from New Hanover Regional Medical Center and several shopping centers. The neighborhood also has easy access to the riverfront downtown and is about 9 miles from Carolina Beach.

Brick ranch-style homes with spacious lawns
Most of the streets here are unmarked and rural in feel. Brick ranch-style homes from the 1970s with attached garages and small covered front porches dominate the architectural landscape, resting on roomy lots just under ½ an acre in size. Lawns are well cared for and decorated with flower beds and carefully shaped shrubs. Tall pine trees shade large backyards. Properties on the neighborhood's northern edge back up to Whiskey Creek, which flows into the Intracoastal Waterway, several blocks to the east. Prices range from $300,000 to $550,000, depending on condition. A new gated development completed in 2021, Whiskey Branch, features Craftsman-inspired New Traditional homes and brick cottage-style townhouses on small, pristinely kept lots lined with sidewalks and saplings. It has community amenities like a pool and clubhouse. Townhouses cost around $350,000, while single-family homes range from $525,000 to $825,000. The Nexus at Whiskey Branch, the next phase of the development, will have about 300 townhouses and apartments. Potential buyers should note that the neighborhood has a risk of flooding and the potential to be hit by a hurricane.

Easy access to Carolina Beach Rd. and College Rd.
Tanglewood’s new development has smooth sidewalks, and while the rest of the neighborhood does not, Barentine says people still go out on evening walks. Driving is the preferred way to get around Wilmington. College Road and Carolina Beach Road roads are nearby for trips to downtown, about 9 miles away. Wilmington International Airport is about 11 miles away. The closest Wave Transit bus stop is on College Road at Greenbrier Road. Cyclists can take the bike-friendly Masonboro Loop Road to connect to other bikeable streets and trails throughout the city.

Take a boat to Masonboro Island Reserve
Tanglewood residents are less than a mile from Trails End Park's serene water views. This small green space, with a boat ramp and fishing pier, is where Whiskey Creek meets the Intracoastal Waterway, a federally maintained route for commercial and recreational boaters that stretches from Massachusetts to Florida. It’s right next to Masonboro Yacht Club. “What’s hard about this area is being able to have that dockage for your boat, so Masonboro Yacht Club is very popular. There’s a waiting list for the boat slips,” Barentine says. Mariners can cruise up and down the Intracoastal or visit Masonboro Island Reserve, a pristine barrier island between the Intracoastal and the Atlantic Ocean, only reachable by boat. Sound-side trails lead visitors to the sandy beach facing the ocean, where they can walk for miles or set up a minimal campsite. Residents like to go to Long Leaf Park for a playground, athletic facilities and a dog park.

Shopping in Monkey Junction
The intersection of College Road and Carolina Beach Road is called Monkey Junction. Once home to a legendary gas station that used live monkeys to bring in business, it’s now a retail center anchored by a Walmart Supercenter. Tanglewood residents can pick up groceries at Lowes Foods and tackle home improvement at The Home Depot. Restaurants range from fast food chains like Cook Out and Burger King to local spots like Sawmill Restaurant, a no-frills eatery serving comfort food. Pints are paired with Shepherd’s Pie and live music at Celtic Monkey Irish Pub and Grill. Two shopping malls, Independence Mall and University Centre, are about 6 and 7 miles away, respectively.
