Milwaukeeans migrate to the surrounding suburbs
With the motto "city living with a touch of country," New Berlin draws in those looking to step back from Milwaukee's active commercial district. The city is proud of its green spaces and serene rural pockets and doesn't shy away from expansion. The area was primarily agricultural and largely undeveloped until the 1940s. As a result, there is room for new housing, parks, industrial sectors and people. "I like being close to the city but not living there itself," says Greg Erchull, Managing Broker of Erchull Real Estate Group. "It's peaceful and quiet here, and I'm willing to make the drive to go to a fancy restaurant on occasion."

New employers and an attentive public works department
New Berlin Industrial Park opened in 1964, bringing technology, engineering and manufacturing jobs. Leading employers like ABB Industrial Systems, ACS Group and Ideal Mechanical are there today. Healthcare professionals work at Froedtert Community Hospital of New Berlin and Aurora Saint Luke's Medical Center in the city's center. There are also major employers in neighboring Brookfield, Waukesha and West Allis.
Interstate 43 passes through the city and heads west to Milwaukee, about 15 miles away. "We're only two steps away from the sports, museums and performing arts centers in Milwaukee," says Natalie Beacom, director of the New Berlin Public Library. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 14 miles east.
Winters are cold and snowy, and Beacom says the Department of Public Works is attentive to the roads. "Whenever something needs fixing, they're on it," she says. "If the roads need to be plowed and salted, they're spit-shined."

Lower property taxes in Waukesha County
The city of New Berlin is a patchwork of farmland and subdivisions. Developments on the city's east side, closer to Milwaukee, have smaller lots and housing styles from the late 1900s, like Colonial Revivals, bi-levels and ranch styles. Prices start at $250,000. New traditional and Modern Craftsman homes with sprawling floorplans and multi-pitched roofs on the west side of New Bermin are the most expensive in the city, reaching up to $1.8 million. The residences in the westernmost part of the city are outside the Utility Service Area and use private wells for their water.
Waukesha County has lower property taxes than Milwaukee County, "And even within Waukesha County, taxes in New Berlin are lower than surrounding cities," Erchull says. The median home price is $415,000, only $9,000 higher than the national median. Still, New Berlin has a higher rate of homeownership and higher median household income than the national average. Houses usually sell after 16 days on the market, and empty lots in new subdivisions sell between $50,000 and $500,000.

A top district in the state
The School District of New Berlin is rated A and ranked as the 15th-best school district in the state by Niche. "Both the community and the city highly value education, and that's something I considered and looked for when moving here," Beacom says. Each of the district's six schools earns at least an A-minus, and the district thrives in academics and college preparation. Personalized education programs, including capstone learning experiences, are available to high schoolers.

Markets and festivals throughout four seasons
Locally owned restaurants, small shops and grocery stores are along West National Avenue, while chains and department stores are farther south on South Moreland Road before the ramps to Interstate 43.

Local events continue throughout the year, including the Independence Day Festival and October's Not-So-Haunted Happenings, known for their family friendly fall activities.
