Defined by its wide variety of homes and access to modern amenities, Amity is an established neighborhood that offers the appeal and convenience of living in northwest New Haven. “It’s a very desirable area, one of the best in the city, and home prices are lower than in other parts of the city,” says Wojtek Borowski, leader of the Edgehill Team at Pearce Real Estate. Amity and the adjacent neighborhood of Westville are known for their architectural diversity, but Amity’s homes are generally smaller and more affordable. The neighborhood is bisected by a buzzy retail and dining corridor and offers proximity to major roadways and a sprawling state park.
Eclectic mix of home styles is attractively priced
Cozy Cape Cods, many featuring iconic stylized dormers but others more understated, are a prominent feature of the neighborhood’s eclectic mix of housing. Ranch-style homes with brick exteriors and vinyl-sided bi-levels also are common. A collection of Colonial Revival-style and Victorian-style homes stands out. You can even find the occasional Tudor-style home. “There is a vast variety, and that is typical of New Haven. Each neighborhood has different pockets,” says Borowski. “That attracts everyone from first-time homebuyers to established professionals and senior faculty. Everyone is going to find a house or property that they can afford and are happy with.” Prices range between the mid-$100,000s and the mid-$400,000s. In contrast, the average home price in Westville is more than $430,000.

Dining options are spread throughout the neighborhood
The Amity Shopping Center is located at the intersection of Connecticut Route 15 and Connecticut Route 63. It is anchored by Amity Brick Oven Pizza, a popular stop for traditional comfort food favorites, and Stop & Shop, a convenient full-service grocer. Carmine's Di Vega, which serves up highly rated classic Italian cuisine; Dozo Asian Bistro & Sushi; and Bill's Carousel Ice Cream & Yogurt are among the varied eateries available along the CT-63 corridor, which bisects the neighborhood from east to west. Katz's Deli, which serves up traditional Jewish classics, is a popular stop nearby.

A pair of state roads makes for easy travel in and around the city
Residents have easy access to public transportation, as the neighborhood’s many bus stops include a large concentration along CT-63, also known as Whalley Avenue. That roadway leads directly to downtown New Haven less than 3 miles away. Highlighted by the campus of Yale University, the downtown district also is home to several cultural attractions, including New Haven Museum and the Connecticut Children’s Museum. CT-15, which runs along the western side of the neighborhood, provides convenient access to travel throughout the region.
Proximity to a sprawling state park with "historical significance"
West Rock State Park is the featured attraction in the adjacent community of West Rock. The sprawling recreational center is known for its trails and elevated views of the surrounding landscape. The South Overlook is a popular sightseeing destination, especially for dog owners, and provides access to the trails. There’s also a playground there on the banks of the West River. “West Rock State Park is a nice feature of the neighborhood with historical significance,” says Borowski. The park is the site of Judges Cave, three overlapping boulders that sheltered two fugitive 17th-century judges eluding the British government. Today, it’s still a great destination for a quick getaway, albeit under different circumstances. The Pond Lilly Nature Preserve is a small neighborhood attraction along the river, which runs through Amity.
West Rock Ridge State Park is the perfect place in Amity for nature lovers and trail hikers.
The West River offers Amity residents easy access to plenty of fishing and relaxation spots.

Neighborhood magnet schools and a nearby private school highlight educational options
Students in kindergarten through eighth grade can attend Davis Street Magnet School, with a focus on arts and engineering, or Mauro-Sheridan Magnet School, with a focus on science, technology and communications. Older students can attend nearby Common Ground High School, Urban Farm and Environmental Education Center. All three specialized institutions are C-rated by Niche. Students in grades 7 through 12 have an alternative option in neighboring Westville. “A big draw is the Hopkins School, which is one of the top private schools in the country,” says Borowski. The co-ed college preparatory school is rated A-plus by Niche.
