A growing suburb just east of Joliet
New Lenox is a far southwest Chicago suburb located 40 miles from downtown and about 5 miles east of Joliet. Its population has tripled to more than 27,000 since the 1990s, though the many farm fields surrounding the subdivisions on the village’s north and south sides hint at the community's rural past and its potential for future growth. Despite the increase in size, eXp Realty, LLC broker Beth Conaghan says it still feels like a small town. “It’s a great community that’s super tightknit,” says Conaghan, who has witnessed the growth as a lifelong resident.
The Village of New Lenox has a population of about 27,000.

Lincoln-Way and Providence Catholic High Schools earn high marks
Schools play a significant role in New Lenox’s appeal. Lincoln-Way Community High School District No. 210 earns an A-plus rating from Niche, making it the top-ranked school district in Will County. Niche also ranks it as the top district for student-athletes in Illinois. Lincoln-Way Central, the town's original public high school, has around 1,950 students. Lincoln-Way West High, opened in 2009, has surpassed Central with nearly 2,000 students enrolled. Providence Catholic High School has around 800 students and gets an A-minus rating. Providence’s proud athletic tradition includes 10 state football championships and six state baseball championships. New Lenox School District No. 122, which consists of 10 elementary schools and two junior high schools, earns a B rating.

Diversity in housing styles reflects growth
New Lenox’s piece-by-piece growth results in a diversity in housing styles. Mid-century ranch-style homes harken to when this was a sleepy village on the outskirts of the then-bustling steel town of Joliet. Condos, townhomes and subdivisions of New Traditional houses reflect the town’s expansion. “We have a consistent rate of housing increases,” Conaghan says. The median sale price of around $415,000 is about $10,000 higher than the national median price, more than $100,000 higher than Joliet and Lockport, and about $100,000 lower than Frankfort. Condos and townhomes range between $175,000 and $475,000. Ranch-style homes start around $210,000, and some estate homes exceeding 6,500 square feet can sell for as much as $2 million.

New Crossroads Sports Complex adds to rich recreational options
The New Lenox Community Park District maintains 40 parks and athletic fields that comprise nearly 600 acres. The park district also operates Sanctuary Golf Course, which has water in play on 14 of its 18 holes.
After years of planning, the village-owned, 100-acre Crossroads Sports Complex will open in July 2025. Crossroads, located near the Interstate 80 and 355 interchange, will feature more than 30 baseball and softball fields and 11 multi-purpose fields for lacrosse, football or soccer.
Multiple forest preserves are outside New Lenox, including Hickory Creek and Potawatomi Woods.
New Lenox is home to the popular Sanctuary Golf Course.
Head to the trails to hike around the natural area of Cherry Hill in New Lenox.

New Lenox Commons the hot spot for community events
New Lenox Commons is the heart of the community. Municipal buildings like Village Hall, the police department and New Lenox Public Library encircle the Commons, which serves as a village green. The 12,000-square-foot KidsWork Children's Museum opened in the summer of 2024 and is the newest addition to New Lenox Commons.
Multiple events and festivals are based here, including Cruise the Commons, Christmas at the Commons and Fridays After Five. The village’s summer performing arts program features free concerts and movie nights. The Summer Concert Series, which was headlined by Smokey Robinson in 2024, is another major Commons event.

Convenient access to I-80 and I-355
Most of New Lenox is just south of the I-80/I-355 junction, making it convenient to Chicago’s southern and western suburbs and the city itself. Two Metra stations provide train service to Downtown Chicago. Chicago Midway International Airport is 30 miles away, and O’Hare International Airport is about 40 miles away.
Old Plank Road Trail, a 22-mile-long paved rail trail that stretches from Chicago Heights to Joliet, runs through New Lenox.
Silver Cross Hospital, originally located in Joliet, relocated to a brand-new campus in New Lenox in 2012.
Ample shopping and dining along U.S. 30
U.S. 30 serves as New Lenox's primary commercial corridor, with grocery stores, restaurants and major retailers lining the highway that serves as the main east-west artery through town. National and regional chain restaurants are the most prevalent. However, there are also true local favorites like The Country Charm, a breakfast and lunch restaurant whose name reflects the village's persona when it opened in 1984.
Bulldog Ale House in New Lenox is a casual pub for sports, burgers, pizza and other bar fare.

Crime well below national averages
In 2023, the violent crime rate in New Lenox was around one-third the national rate, and the property crime rate was about half the national rate. Like the rest of the Chicagoland area, New Lenox can experience hot, humid days in the summer and frigid, snowy days in the winter. Tornadoes have also touched down in New Lenox on occasion—an EF-1 in 1988 and EF-2 twisters in 1965 and 1993.
